I hunted this deer for two years on a ranch similar to the one you're on. Granted, I wasn't after him with stick and string, but it was still an ass whip trying to outsmart the old guy. 8.5 year old patriarch.

Weather is supposed to change, with rain this afternoon and tonight. Also will be a switch in wind from SE to NNW. I was hoping it would come Sunday.


For now the wind is still perfect. Hopefully the impending weather will have the deer moving this morning. Will hunt this morning then head home until the wind switches back

Saw him this morning: he wouldn't come to the feeder though because there were 3 other mature bucks and JLAB is a puss. One of the bigger bucks pushed him out when he tried to come in, and it looked like he headed to where o turned the feeder off yesterday.

I'll come back mom or tues. wind will mean I have to try the place where i turned feeder off. Pop up is still there, so animals should be used to it by then

I think that location may be better, as there's no other old deer in there and he will be more comfortable

Gone

Made it. Got stuff unpacked and checked cameras. Pigs have been regular where I have the pop up, and JLAB won't feed w them there.

Sure enough, they were milling around waiting for the feeder to throw.

Grabbed my AR and snuck up to 80 yds. Since these are the o ly known 4 on the place I didn't want to kill one, just scare it. Shot between two and they hauled ass.

That will keep them nocturnal for a few days.

Tonight's dinner:

Shot a couple quail birds on the way in, and have some stuffed jalapeños

Sit 7.

Wanted to go to pop, but wind it wrong. So back in same place as last week. 4 does out early, but they got spooked by something.

Slow sit. Saw the 10 with extras and 8 with no G3's. Wind will be switching out of the north tonight so I'll be in the pop tomorrow morning

Back to the pop this afternoon. About my luck, he was there when I walked in and spooked. Saw 6 deer, including the big 8. Going back there tomorrow morning with a marginal wind

Pretty slow hunt this morning. Went to pop up. Saw like 2 bucks and a handful of does.

This afternoon I didn't have very high hopes. Wind was bad, but wasn't blowing very hard. Ended up seeing 6 bucks and about 8 does.

I'm going to see if I can shoot one of the bucks I saw if he shows up before JLAB.

Back in the popup. 33 degrees. Pretty ow so far… one buck and a couple does and fawns.

Seems like this spot is better in the evenings. Stomach is rumbling so I may be forced into an early egress

Yesterday PM:

Hunted the pop up despite horrible wind. Cyclops was the first deer out, smelled me and immediately left. He came back two more times but wouldn't stay because of my stank.



I decided to get out and go sit up the road with my 308 in hopes he would come back. Went to the truck and got my gun, and after about 5 min he came out. Had him broadside at 109 yds, crosshair on his shoulder…. Couldn't pull the trigger.



Wind died down so I snuck back into blind. Saw a coupe of deer but he did not show back up.

This morning:

It was COLD as **** this morning. I forgot to set an alarm and came flying out of the bed when I woke up at 5:56

Got into blind at 6:20, and waited. Mornings have been slow back there so I was more focused on staying warm than anything. About 7:15 a buck comes out of the brush. It's him. Not cyclops. HIM. JLAB. He stayed out for about 15 minutes. This deer is smart. Though he didn't bust me he seemed to know something wasn't kosher. Stayed facing me, never offering a decent shot or coming closer than 33 yds. Between the cold and nerves I was shaking so bad I could literally see my leg moving.

Quick refuel/senorita scouting session

It was 28 this morning in the blind and very chilly. I had a similar hunt several years back that it was about the same temp and I couldn't hold steady because I was so cold too. It was 2-3 big Aoudad rams I wish I would've smacked with a bow.

Fortunately I had my daughter with me this morning so we had a propane heater going!

He just showed up. Fed for about 20 minutes. Closest he was with an available shot was 43 yds. Wind isn't great, but he seemed to know something was up. Never spooked, just super suspicious.

Saw both deer this evening. Both were super alert, so much so that I didn't feel comfortable taking any of the shots I was given due to distance.

As I type this the cyclops deer is at 31.8…. If it were JLAB I'd send it, but im not gonna take a long-ish shot on my second choice. This is a marathon, not a sprint. JLAB has been here last 2 sits. I've got time on my side, and just need him to get complacent one time.

These two deer are consuming me. Last thing I think about as I try and go to sleep is running an arrow through one of these deer.

This isn't about horn size… neither of the bucks will break 120".

This is about outsmarting a deer that has eluded hunters multiple years- and doing it with a bow.

I want one of these old brutes so bad I can taste it.

Well, I'm a puss. Had him at 26 yards and didn't shoot. Drew back, and right as I was pressing the button he turned away. The draw and no shoot destroyed my nerves. Got another shot at 28 but I couldn't settle the pin and didn't feel comfortable taking the shot. The good news is he's gotten regular here and is feeding closer than he had been. I have time and biology on my side. Patience
