Scouted out this hole and surprisingly got permission despite all the cattle on it. Lots of teal on it but quite a few big ducks got up on the back part you can't see in the picture. I'll report back here when we get a hunt put together on how it goes!

Should be a beating. Wonder if recycled corn counts as baiting?

I can smell panhandle feed yard duck ponds from 9 hours away. Need to get back up there. I've heard milled white rice is the bait of choice in Arkansas. Maybe that's how they keep them there thru the season.

Hunted Anahuac this morning. Shot 4 and the biologist said that I doubled his numbers for the day when I checked out at 10:15.

They're not bad. I was somewhat damp after the 4 days of hunting this past week which was the first time I've worn them but I think it was sweat.

I took the wife to the Hagerman preserve yesterday and there were a couple thousand more Snows with some Ross scattered in. Couple hundred Pintails and couple hundred Shovelers scattered around the ponds. Went to our duck lease next door to check, but the landowners grandson was fishing on our pond so no birds were there. We are hunting morning of 1/1 so I'll report back

How does that hunting/fishing thing work? I thought the hagerman was a reservation type deal?

Got a rare bufflehead for me to go along with the usual ducks.

I know some people don't like them but I don't know how. The drakes are awesome looking!

I've seen a lot of what I believe are buffleheads near our place in Rogers. They used to hang out on the water treatment ponds near town.

It is a national preserve but our place borders it.
Same thing as hunting deer or elk on private property that borders Yellowstone.

We went out this morning to our lease by the Hagerman.
2 shooters. Ended up with 9 ducks (lots of misses too).

Lots of birds flying right before legal shooting light. Good mix of ducks around. Had 15 Lesser Canadas fly over us too, but too high to shoot at. Lots of Gadwall and Shovelers around.
We ended up with
5 Gadwall
1 Bluebill
1 Ringneck
1 Widgeon
1 Canvasback

Unfortunately our duck ID skills are not as good as they should be. We thought the canvasback was a big, old redhead drake. The Merlin bird ID app corrected us later. Should've taken it to the taxidermist, but it's too late now.

I've never made teal that fresh but imagine it is good! I like the breakfast taco idea!

My teal are almost always with biscuits and gravy.

No sweat. Still no water here, came looking for a deer/hog/coyote just to get out the house on a hunting weather type day.

What a pile of teal! Seemed like this weather should've moved a few birds around.

I broke some new ground with eating diver ducks. Previously relegated to gumbo or poppers and not given a second thought.

Cleaned the breast thoroughly removing skin and any fat. Soaked in brine. Added to ziplock with sliced apples and crushed blueberries overnight. Cooked to medium rare in cast iron skillet…and I must say, they turned out to be some tasty treats.

Good deal. A lot of people turn their nose up because of something they heard. Most of them taste like.......... duck.

To be fair, I've eaten some badddd divers.

I went from a decade of nothing but mottled ducks, teal, gads, etc and started hunting an area in mid 2000s that would get covered in divers. Not knowing any better, I would leave all the fat on, didn't bother with brining, and over cook them. Not a good combination.

So into the gumbo pot they went.
