I need to outfit the family so I need some recommendations for reliable gear under $100.

Cabelas space rain or frogg togg at that price point.

That would be my suggestion, but the under $100 won't work.

The Marmots are on sale for $70 right now. Are the Frog Toggs decent quality?

I had two sets of frog toggs. Camo and green. Both pants ripped in the crotch. Got soaked in cold weather once.

I like these Columbia ones for light weight. They're less than $100 at Academy.

I found that one floating in the intracoastal in Port O'Connor one day. Already had the same one and same size,
got a back up now!

Columbia puts out pretty solid clothes. I've looked at those as well. Marmot and Mountain Hardware both have rain coats in my budget. Is one brand better than the other?

Make sure you are getting waterproof and not water resistant. I would also not expect to find breathable at that price point.

Agreed. I'm not looking for goretex. It's too hot where I'm headed, so that's not recommended. Lightweight and packable, and waterproof will be enough.

My really good rain coat is First Lite. It's like $300 but quality.

Those Columbia ones work great though, they're super lightweight, easy to pack into a back pack, and they keep ya dry. They literally fold up into nothing. Could damn near shove em in a fanny pack if ya had to.

I've never had a sub $100 Columbia jacket that was actually waterproof in a squall, but I quit wearing their stuff about 15 years ago and switched to all Simms. I understand those aren't sub $100 price ranged options.

I've worn that jacket I posted bashing my way across the bay, duck hunting, at work in driving rain, around the house taking the trash out, etc etc…and it's always kept me dry.

Makes a good ease fishing jacket too!

Eddie bauer has several good options in 50-100 range. I have an insulated waterproof breatheable from like 10 yrs ago still going strong, just picked a thin shell model non insulated a few weeks ago. Great products.

Biggest one I've ever caught. You'd be familiar with the spot, was right on the corner of Mitchell's cut before you take a left towards the old coast guard station.

Sorry I hijacked the thread OP!

Looks like they're $50 at Academy.

I've got a lands end rain jacket that i bought for traveling in europe (i.e., not camo) and it's been great. This might be a good option

Marmot precip pit zips will be good in the warm weather. Best value rain jacket imo.

Another vote for those Columbias. No need to spend any more money than that. I'm on my third because wife and kiddo have stolen my first two over the years.

Thanks for all the replies. Solid recommendations, especially for the kids. The Sitka recommendation was completely expected on the outdoor board!

Yes Sir. We've stroked some trout not far from there in a falling tide in spring.

Marmot Precips are $60 on amazon right now.

I grabbed this on sale earlier in the year. Really light weight (almost concerningly so) and great in rain.

I got it to keep in my bag for my oldest's golf tournaments where I caddy. Those random summer rain showers suck, but this has been perfect for that.

Yeah, if you want a Small puke green!

Marmot is a decent brand for some things but their jackets have some long term issues on holding up. Read the reviews.

Though I haven't owned one, I think my next lightweight, breathable rain jacket (not necessarily fold up) will be a Little Donkey Andy one. Weird name aside, they get good reviews and seem to have a solid product. My only concern is fit and length as I like my jackets long so I can conceal if needed -- even with lightweight jackets.

The other one you can look at, and one that I do have, is the 5.11 packable jacket. Its solid. Maybe not as technical as the other ones mentioned in terms of fabric but it is designed to fold up and will definitely keep light rain off of you. If you need to stay warm, you'll need something underneath, but for me, that's never an issue (I pretty much ignore cold if I have to).

I dare not mention Patagonia because they are crazy commies

(But they do make the lightest rain jacket that works that I ever seen)
