Son is about to be 14 and is 5'3". Ate up with fishing and we hit the salt a good bit so I know he'll love a cast net. Any recommendations on size and brand to get started with?

3.5ft mono

My grandfather started me on a 6ft when I was 10 or 11. As long as he knows the mechanics and practices throwing it, he shouldn't have any trouble with 6ft, plus it has more capture area.

4ft net for a young fella. Once he gets better and stronger can start to move up in size.

Dad made me throw a 7' at that age. Only because that was his old one.

We had to learn by mistakes back then, those were the days. Spin or no spin, hold with teeth, grip more in the right hand, make sure pull rope is around wrist.

With all the videos out there, I'd get him a 6 footer, he should be able to see enough ways to throw it and master one of them really quickly.

I had to spin as a kit just to get it off the ground. I was always impressed by the guys that would throw the huge nets by folding them in half.

I remember the old school OB days when you couldn't have a cast net thread go 6 posts before you got a Jessica Jae tutorial link. Now she's all wifed up, has a family, and shut down her YouTube account leaving us only a few stills to remember them by. Probably about the time Sean98 drug up from here... coincidence??

Believe me a good Jessica Jae tutorial would have had a 14 year old young man out there practicing his cast net throwing under a security lamp in the middle of the night...

Oh, he'll be up all night doing something. That's for sure.
