Victor Dog Food Recall - Replacement?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and state partners, is investigating seven human cases of Salmonella Kiambu infection potentially associated with pet food made by Mid America Pet Food.
Mid America Pet Food has voluntarily recalled all the pet food brands it manufactured with a best by date before 10/31/2024, which include Victor, Eagle Mountain, Wayne Feeds and two varieties of Member's Mark pet foods.

These products include both dog and cat foods and were sold nationwide in retail stores and online. See the full list of products below.

This recall expands previous recalls by the firm on September 3, 2023 and October 30, 2023.
CDC reports that, as of November 1, 2023, seven people infected with the strain of Salmonella have been reported from seven states (see map). Six of seven cases reported were in children one year of age or younger. Five of these cases reported exposure to dogs and three reported feeding Victor pet food to their pets. Illnesses started on dates ranging from January 14, 2023, to August 19, 2023 (see timeline). One person was hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported.

A retail sample of Victor brand Hi-Pro Plus dry dog food collected by the South Carolina State Department of Agriculture and analyzed by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control matches the strain of Salmonella found in the seven ill people.


I luckily have a bag of the VICTOR Classic Multi-Pro Dry Dog Food from before the 10/31/2024 expiration date. Not sure what I'm going to switch to. Anybody on here been affected? And if so, what are you going to switch to?

If you want the best dry dog food go with Hills Science Diet.

We have some Victor dry cat food that we feed the outside cats. I don't have the bag anymore as we store our pet food in rodent proof containers.

They seem to be doing fine.

My wife called chewy and switched out lab's food. The lady told her there had been several infants that got sick, assume they're grabbing food off the ground. Or like our girls, stealing it out of the dog bowl while the dogs are eating.

Yeah, we went into Atwoods the other day to get some. Always fed the turquoise bag, no problems. Couldn't find any anywhere, asked an employee, said the manufacturer said pull it all and throw it away. Just went with their store brand called Ranch Hound, mini bites. All the mini schnauzers seem to like it so far.

it's crazy how these "ultra premium" grain free dog foods seem to be recalled more than regular stuff. i used to buy into that stuff. but, it turns out there was no science behind this stuff. just marketing.

fed pro plan for years. now on science diet. all good.

Victor Hi Pro Plus is not grain free?
Victor has grain free options, but most aren't grain free. It's just the thing to do to rail on grain free now.

Sounds likes it's little kids probably either placing the food in their mouth or getting licked on the face by the family pet.

Just got the alert and I plan to call their service line in the morning because I'm not clear if it means only the batch of bags with the October date, or it also saying any of the dates that are up to October? Our bags have July 2024 on them.

Our bag was August 2024 and Chewy told us to dispose of it.

Well dang. Thank you. Looks like Pet Supplies Plus will do full refunds, so I'll bring my 2 bags back and swap. I'm thinking Diamond Naturals. What did you switch to?

Went to tractor supply this morning and they were able to look up my purchase on my account. They gave me a refund and I used the credit to buy some pro plan I used to feed.

I'll probably go back to victor when it's available. $22 difference for a 50 lbs bag.

I've had really good luck with this stuff. Not sure where all it's sold, but I get it from my local hardware store for about $40 per 50 lb bag.
Self limiting too, so the dogs don't eat too much. Keeps them in good condition but not fat at all.

Chicken Soup for the Soul... really annoyed with the brand name, but the food is great. We put our 1yo Weim on it at the recommendation of our neighbors who have 5 weims that all currently compete or are retired from field competition.

My PSP gave me credit for a bag and showed me the cross reference for each Victor. For the green bag I usually buy they pointed me to a Redford naturals beef and brown rice. It was a $22 delta…so not cheap.

What pisses me off is a few months ago I noticed the kibble had changed and then my 140lb dog had a major stomach issue locked in a room. It was a complete nightmare. Called Victor and they looked up stuff with the date codes etc and claimed no issues.

I've always heard that you should slowly switch from 1 dog food to another. Since we can't do that here, what should I do to make the switch easier on our dog?

Feed them a smaller portion than normal for a few feedings. That's what I would do if I couldn't transition.

Had an easy return at Pet Supplies Plus yesterday and got a few recommendations for the senior line. I chose the Diamond Naturals senior bag because all the ingredients looked pretty good. My pup has cleaned up every bowl so I think we are good for now.

I also called the Victor service line and got my info logged for updates.

Hopefully they can bounce back!

Chewy emailed me about the recall.

I simply replied to their email with a picture of the UPC and "Best By" date from my bag, and asked if they would be issuing refunds. They immediately emailed me back saying they had refunded my card for the full price of that bag, and gave me a coupon code for 50% off of a new bag of my choice. Couldn't have been easier.

Hills jacked up their prices on the stuff we used to buy by 30-40% so we switched to this and have been very pleased. Our dog has chronic arthritis and this is more cost effective without and changes in quality of life.

My feed store recommended this as a close replacement to Victor Professional (purple bag)

Both dogs handled the hard transition well - and one of them has a very sensitive stomach

Hopefully Hi-Point is a lot better at making dog food than they are at making firearms!

Went into a Pet's Barn and they had "Next Level Premium Pet Food". Turns out they are the same folks that had sold Mid America (Victor) and started operating this year. Even have the same color schemes to match the Victor lines. Checked out their Facebook and they have a beautiful new facility. We'll see if they work out.

I just emailed them and said, "How do I get a refund?" I got a long email apologizing saying I'm getting 2 refunds and 50% off my next auto ship. Idk if they were able to look back and see I had two bags that were affected or what, but I didn't send them anything more than that.

On another note, I didn't realize how high Pro Plan has gotten.

Went to atwoods and they had Wildology Fetch. My dog ate it faster than she had been eating Victor.

Made a 100% switch, she's a dog and should be able to handle it fine
