Savage Axis II 308 with Scope

Academy has this one on sale, for $30 off and then an additional $40 rebate from Savage basically covers the tax so all in, you are at about $460 with scope, for a cerakoted barrel .308.

Anyone have one already and like/don't like? I have been thinking about picking up a .308. Figured I would start here for a field gun.

I have the wood stock version.

Figure out whatever you want to do with it before you sight it in, because you have to take off the action from the stock to install a bipod, change forward sling stud, adjust trigger, etc.

If scope works for you, then great, but it's not a nice one.

My stock has a little bit of play in it with the action. No matter what I do, it still has like 1/16" where it will bump on the front screw. It's still free floated and accuracy is still 1MOA, but it bothers me.

I've had it for 5-6 years and got it on an Academy special where it was on sale and came with a free super combo license, so I paid something like $250-$270. At the $450 range, I'm not sure if there are better options or not.

For another $100 you can get a Walnut stocked Mossberg patriot with a vortex optic.

Doesn't have a threaded barrel though, so if going to suppress for a budget 308 wait for the Ruger American to go on sale.

At Academy, Ruger American Predator has a $100 rebate right now. No optic included but would be $399 after rebate. In my experience the combos sold leave a lot to be desired on the optics end anyways. Plus it has a threaded barrel like post above mentioned.

Put a decent scope on a Ruger American Predator and you've got about as nice of a budget gun setup as you can have. Mine with a Timney trigger and Magpul Hunter stock shoots 1/2" groups all day.

Shot my cousins Axis II and it kinda strung shots on us with multiple different factory ammo choices.

For the record, the Mossberg Patriot is in my opinion the best sub $600 gun on the market. Hands down. And I have handled all of them.

I just shot my sons .243 Patriot today. Love that gun.

Ok. It looks like I may try to cancel my order. I was hoping this was a better deal than it appears to be.

That gun will likely be very accurate but it is not a steal. I don't think you will be unhappy with it.

I think I may try and get a little bit nicer gun used, and put better glass on it. That is, if I can cancel it.

If you cannot, I don't think you will be disappointed. Axis takes short shank savage barrels and the accutrigger is awesome

I gave away a mossberg patriot because is didn't shoot better than 1.5" groups with anything i fed it. Handloads or factory.

I guess others have had better success.

That said, I helped a coworker set up an Axis in 270 that shoots .65" groups with factory ammo.

It's something of a luck game.

No doubt. My son's Mossberg .243 is extremely accurate. it is one inch with Power Points and about 1.5 with Federal Blue box and Norma. Strangely it didn't like Core Lokts but everything else I have tried it is very good. And thats using the stock rings and a Simmons scope.

I have heard others say the same thing you said about both Savage and Mossberg rifles.

Definitely an inexact science.

Even the Axis without the Accutrigger are quite accurate.

Add a $20 trigger kit from M Carbo (essentially two shim washers and a spring) and you'll likely group even better.

Didn't make it in a wood stock. That's why I went with the Mossberg

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea to have to change out a stock, but Boyd's makes some dang nice wooden stocks in classic looks for the Ruger American Predator. If I end up with another one, I'll definitely be putting a nice Walnut stock on it.

I got one of these when they did a deal like this last year. Gun is awesome but the scope has been upgraded since.

I just didn;t want to get that fancy. I needed it in a youth stock and they had it so I went with it. Turns out to be a great gun.

I have looked into Boyds before and when the kids get bigger I may put a Boyds full stock on it.

I have this gun with a slightly different optic that I bought in a similar bundle a couple years ago. It kills deer.

I went to the local academy to buy it in 30-06 and the stock was beat to **** and it was the last one, so I went with a .308. One plus was it had a much prettier stock on it. Really dark wood compared to a light wood on the 30-06. Excited to get out and shoot it.

A friend of mine has an Axis, don't know how old it is or what trigger is in it. It is the worst trigger I've ever felt in a bolt action. He shot my Tikka (stock trigger) and AR (Geissele trigger) and was amazed how much easier it was to execute a good shot.

I can't personally vouch for it, but others on Texags have said it's good-to-go. https://texags.com/forums/34/topics/3372846

I've shopped that site before and will probably pull the trigger on something from them sooner than later.

If this is on sale for $400, in addition to a $100 rebate, it's a good deal.

Actually, I read the fine print. The "rebate" is "Ruger Rewards". To be used at Ruger.com
So, not a cash rebate

Well heck. I didn't bother reading the fine print whilst sitting in the blind.

$100 is free scope rings. Or a sling. Or 10/22 magazines.
