1) Court orders aren't always legal. https://theintercept.com/2016/02/29/apple-wins-major-court-victory-in-its-battle-against-fbi-in-a-case-similar-to-san-bernardino/
You battle that in court, not with these people.

Sorry Liberty Safe; too little, too late. Don't trust you anymore. You go ahead and do you from now on. I'll choose to do business with a company who looks to protect their customers first. Also, now that we see your priorities, someone who we trust has investigated other business practices you have engaged in. Liberty Safe is actively working against our political interests. I'm sorry for this guy in Arkansas but it is a lesson learned. Caveat emptor.

The FBI turned off his security cameras, unplugged his internet, and flipped his house upside down in a search. The feds called the manufacturer of his Liberty Gun Safe and got the passcode to get into it too. All for protesting at the Capitol over 2 1/2 years ago.

yeah, i'm sure he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

sorry, but I don't feel bad for any of these idiots who participated on jan 6th.
Ahh yes....peaceful protesting is verboten these days. Carry on, comrade.
Talk to the family of that dead cop about that peaceful protest.

He suffered strokes on January 7th and died of natural causes, according to the medical examiner. But don't let that stop you from smearing thousands of people, most of who had no direct contact with law enforcement.

You mean the officer that died from a heart attack that wasn't related to the protest?

Because the only actual violence at the supposed attempt at a coup was instigated by capitol police when one of their force shot an unarmed woman and killed her.

Most of them disclose in the owners manual that the manufacturer keeps a master code.

They also state that you can change the master code.

This. And all those EULA forms we sign yes on for Google, apple, etc all have stuff buried in them about the fact that they can do what they want.

The issue here for me is not that they have backup codes. They should. I'm glad they do. The fact that someone chose an electronic lock means they value convenience over security and that is right in line with the practice.

The issue I have is that it sounds like they gave up the users code with a warrant that did not name Liberty. They did not have to comply. The eventually would have had to, most likely, but that's what they should have forced.

The fact that people don't know there is a back up code is largely on the end user. It's in the manual, and if it's not then it should be and that's another issue.

Otherwise, this whole thing is the result of a single split second poor decision. Amazing.

I found it incredibly difficult to get a decent safe with a mechanical lock when I was looking.

I found that all floor models were electronic but you could order it however you wanted. Plus, you could save 100 bucks by opting for mechanical. Personally, I like the electronic better for ease but mechanical because I feel like it will work all the time. Trade offs all the way around.

this being the outdoors board and all, rather disappointed no one is arguing over the best way to cut open one of these safes

Attack the hinges or the floor.

Cut the top off like a tin can with an angle grinder and a cut off wheel. Stay close up to the edge and the gypsum/fireproofing should absorb most of the sparks/debris. Wouldn't take more than 10min.

Sides, back or top. Door and hinges are usually hardened steel even on residential safes. And many have hidden hinges to prevent them being drilled out. Sides are typically mild steel plate and not treated, so can easily* be cut with power tools.

*not easy-easy, but absolutely possible in even a reasonable amount of time with abrasive blades and sawzalls

Same with me. I was leery of the electronic, but find it is much easier to use than mechanical and after 15 years, still haven't had any issues.

Mechanical looks better, no doubt about that. Has that classic look that a safe is supposed to have. But if you are accessing the safe even somewhat regularly, electronic is the way to go IMO.

Theres a great book on lockpicking by a guy named Pat Watson thats worth a read.

Yall are working too hard with the cutting into the side of the safe stuff.

Humans are lazy and the most hackable part of any security system.

In this case, the "two step rule" would apply. If there is a combo written down or a key to a lock, its likely hidden within two steps of the "secure" door.

Bet yall can all think of a lock you own where thats the case (hopefully not your safe, but….).

Anyway, back to the thread.
