Adding tie down anchors to truck toolbox

I have a diamond plate weatherguard truck toolbox.

I was thinking of installing some tie down anchors on top and rear facing side of the box.

Is this a terrible idea? I cant seem to find anyone doing this on the internet.

Was likely going to use something like these and use through bolts vs the screws with some neoprene washers to waterproof it.

I assume you have an older box because the new ones come with tie downs

Anyways, that is proof that is doable

Should work fine. I'd make some good backing plates out of starboard and throughbolt with good stainless bolts/washers/nylock nuts. Seal around it with 3M 4200.

You could run a piece of e-track across that would distribute the load and allow you to move the tie downs around as needed

I think you can get it at harbor freight now really cheap

I've never used 3M 4200 but marine adhesive seems excessive and expensive in this situation. Maybe just some RTV or home owner exterior graded silicone?

Before you go securing loads to the toolbox, how is the toolbox secured to the truck?

Maybe so. I'm used to rigging stuff that will hold up to rough seas, so my way may be overkill for most uses.

I did it with a couple of stainless u-bolts, was very handy. Not nearly as strong as the factory bed tie downs, but sure beat trying to jerry rig things.

Used double nuts and large washers, never had any problems.

Very good suggestion. Anchors just bolted to sheet metal might not be very strong and could deform the box. Some kind of plate on the inside will help a lot.

I've put them on the tailgate facing side to tie down dogboxes - used stainless u-bolts with one nut/ fender washer on the outside and two nuts/backing plates on the inside. Never had any problems.

I might be hesitant to put any on the top. Ratchet something down a little too tight and you run the risk of bowing that lid or just tweaking it out of square and now your lid doesn't latch.

Thanks everyone. I will definitely add some backing. I may go the u-bolt route as I am a bit worried about the swivel anchor points rattling around.
