We will be spending a couple of days at my in-laws at their beach house in Beach City. Would like to do some fishing with my kids. Gonna take my Hobie kayak and they also have a pier.

Any recs for tackle, bait, etc?

I would go over to fort anahuac park. Go down the peninsula and paddle over to the river channel. Fish the dropoffs and areas near the deeper water. Watch the tide, you can end up dragging your kayak back to the truck real easy.

If you want to stay close to beach city, you can drop in at the rv park and paddle inland. It makes a big loop with 3-4 lakes. Have had decent luck in the lakes for reds and flounder. One of the lakes used to be called Negrohead lake. No clue how it got that name. I believe it has been changed, though I don't know the new name.

Forgot to add McCollum park. It will be a booger to get a heavy hobie up and down the hill, but it can be done. Paddle over to the HL&P spillway. I have never done this in a kayak. Fished the spillway from a power boat and didn't have any luck, but old timers tell about how it was like a magic spot back in the day.

I guess it isn't a beach house. Just on the water.

Just messing with ya, i live in beach city and I get that question all the time. The park would be a great option to wade fish depending on age of kids. Its about this time the fish start moving into Jacks pocket depending on how far you want to paddle. Stay hydrated.

Yes. And it was even better inside the gate.

That beach city neighborhood dock area is good fishing. We would often run across the bay to fish it if not catching elsewhere. We would start on the N end and fish a gut- google point barrow beach city. And then fish South along the drop off about 75-100 yards off. There are old shell pads out there and the dock pilings hold flounder sometimes. Mostly fished the jig head/ soft plastics slowly bounced off the bottom.

Thanks for the help! Didn't end up bringing the kayak so will be limited to pier or some wading (though I didn't bring my wading belt).

We had a lot of fun and a great visit with family, but fishing was a bust. I ended up not bringing the kayak and definitely wished I had. We fished one night pretty late and he caught a bunch of hard heads and a stingray so he had a good time. This was a last minute trip and I really could have prepared better and set us up for more success. I threw artificials but no luck.

We are going on a guided trip in two weeks in Rockport so this was good experience for him and hopefully we start fishing more frequently.
