Is one better than the other for a day trip? Haven't been to the beach in matagorda in decades so can't remember the setup.

Us and the neighbors want to make a day trip this weekend and trying to decide which one to go to.

Farther south is always better.

Matagorda is more remote and you'll want 4wd. That's where we prefer. Generally fewer people most days and nice fluffy sand.

Funny the wife and I were trying to decide the same thing earlier this afternoon. Crazy that we are in Austin County too……..

Both are within a few minutes drive from our homes. We decided on Matagorda because haven't been to surf side in years and last time it was a little rough.

I live not far from Surfside and will go to Matagorda over Surfside simply because of how many and what type of people tend to congregate at Surfside.

Unfortunately it is close to Houston and we get the Houston ferals and the crap they bring.

Matagorda requires an annual permit though. I think its $15 per vehicle. You can get them at Stanleys in Matagora right before the bridge.

I think it was $10. Stanley's was out of permits last weekend so I purchased at the welcome center at the end of the road, go past where u turn to beach and it is on the right.

Matagorda 10$ permit is right but driving on the beach is easier at surfside because of the flour sand at Matagorda. Last week the only vehicles driving on the upper beach were the jacked up 4x4 trucks. Everyone else was driving on the wet sand except when some less than respectful beach goer parked on it, then it is good to have 4wd to go around them in the flour sand. If you do go to Matagorda please turn out of the wet sand so other people can get by.

Matagorda- take an air compressor. Let air out of tires down to about 15 lbs before getting on sand.

Take a long handled shovel and bucket to clear frame if you get stuck. 5 gal bucket to wet down sand.

Is a beach permit needed to drive in Freeport beach?

For Surfside, yes. For Follet's, no. For Quintana/Bryan, no.
