This time a guy saw a bison calf get separated from its mother and tried to intervene. The hard rejected it when park rangers tried to reunite it, and it had to be euthanized.

You should have to pass a basics outdoor test in order to access Yellowstone.

What the actual F? From the story towards the bottom...

Another Yellowstone bison calf was euthanized following human interference in 2016. Edward O'Brien of Montana Public Radio reported that two tourists placed the calf in their car and drove it to a nearby park facility because they "thought the animal looked cold and uncomfortable."

Y'all realize it will only get worse, right? The vast majority of Americans only have outdoor experience from a city park or backyard the size of a living room. For cheap trips or to "experience the outdoors" they just load up and drive through parks usually having never even seen any of these animals before. They don't watch the outdoor or discovery channels and know what nature is really like. The more citified Americans get, the more dumb decisions they will make in parks. Harsh fines won't teach anyone before the fact either. Videos would help, but we have too many idiots trying to get "outdoorsy" now.

How about just a reading exam?

I've never been to Yellowstone but I assume just like any state or national park there are signs and postings everywhere about what NOT to do.

When I went backpacking in Yellowstone, they made me watch a video on bears. Probably should be required by all visitors so they won't be idiots.

Me and my hiking partner had, however, been personally trained by our own urus and found the video lacking compared to his training!

There are. But Yellowstone gives you lots of opportunities to color outside the rules. Fortunately it also has an inate ability to exert a price in return.

This one is a bit heavy handed. I mean dude wasn't taking selfie for the Gram, he seemed to legit be trying to assist a baby calf. I would not press charges.

He totally led to the death of the calf. He went against the rules and common sense.

The first rule listed on their website
"Willfully remaining near or approaching wildlife, including nesting birds, within any distance that disturbs or displaces the animal."
He violated that, caused the animal to be rejected, and led to its death.

No excuse.

I could see adding hoops to those who want to drive independently within the park. I don't necessarily like it - but it could help to funnel the midwits to tour busses and not get themselves in position to do stupid stuff.

Nope

This wasn't a calf running out in front his car. This was no accident.

Should be punished as much as the law allows.

This was the "Judges' Favorite" entry to the annual Cody Wyoming 4th July parade that year. Locals making fun of tourists.

The park is overpopulated with bison anyway. The ranchers adjoining the park wish they would take out many more.

So, um.

After they euthanize it, what do they do with the meat?

Yes, the guy was an idiot. But my reading is that the calf got stuck in the river and was probably wolf food anyway.

Going through the tourons of Yellowstone video, I find a touron right here in my backyard. Well, 80 miles away in Caprock Canyons State Park.

I will say that we encountered two bachelor bulls on a trail in CC a few years ago. We got off the trail as far as we could, kept quiet, and I wondered if the 9mm I was carrying would do anything besides make them angry. Lucky for us, they just ambled on by.

My photo, taken with 135mm telephoto, after they had passed:

Very serious. Park police coming after some schmoe for trying to help an animal left behind is the same as ATF coming after people who bought perfectly legal pistol braces. Both are going too far. We need less .gov. Those f-wits that get tossed by bison for getting too close 100% deserve pain and fines. This situation does not sound like that scenario at all.

Why did they euthanize? Gosh I wish there was some sort of organization or something that took animals and raised them in sanctuaries. Man, what a great idea. Someone should start an organization like that.

Good troll job. But just in case - he broke park rules and they had to destroy a bison as a result. The pamphlet they give you at the gate along with signage warn you not to touch or approach wildlife.

The calf was separated from the heard, common sense tells us it wasn't going to be "reunited" regardless. Yet people go balls out on him being a criminal, wanting to charge him for touching the calf, because of a pamphlet warning against it. Sounds like the people who would also "angrily" yell at you for standing on grass or wearing a hat where you shouldn't.

Just because it was separated at the moment doesn't mean it was going to be left for good.

If you look at the picture it looks like he's keeping it from drowning in the river. It isn't something I would do, but we don't seem to know the full circumstances.

The guy disturbed wildlife by carrying it. It is against park rules because it is a place to preserve wildlife and doing so can harm humans and the wildlife.

What other information you need?

Nothing, but I can see how someone who didn't know the rules might do what he did if it was in danger of dying
