What does the all knowing OB think is the best method for getting rid of coyotes within city limits?

I've heard sponges with peanut butter work, but that seems slow and gruesome.

Maybe a nice air rifle?

What else?

…why?

Got some new pups that I don't want to become a snack for them

Get rid of their food source and they will move on.

Not likely to get ride of coyotes in the city limits. You might be able to kill/trap some currently in that area, but more will eventually move in.

1. Catch a bunch of feral cats.
2. Let go around your neighbor's houses.
3. No more coyotes at your house.

With all due respect, and not being a SA.... wife and I have raised multiple litters of Labs and German Shepherds at our ranch in Junction where we hear coyotes almost every night. Never had one come into our yard to get the puppies. Is that a known problem in your neighborhood?

How do you get rid of all the squirrels, rabbits, birds, moles, lizards, snakes, berries, dog crap, road kill and everything else they eat?

They get real close at night in the back yard and we just had 2 run right through the front yard, so they are definitely close. I don't really want to have to kill them, but I also do not want to lose my dogs.

In urban areas they are usually coming to trash, dog and cat food, mice and rats in trashy areas etc. They won't usually come into a yard to eat a lizard or squirrel only. They are usually attracted by one of the above.

Understand.

Yes I understand, but I would like to be able to leave the dogs outside without having to worry about/ watch them. We back up to a green area with a half height fence, so they could jump right over and grab a pup.

I thought the OP was talking about eliminating them from the city limits. Sure, you can generally keep them out of your yard with your recommendations, but they will always be around neighborhoods within city limits with adequate green spaces, drainage areas, etc.

That's always going to be a possibility. My neighbor had a pair dart into their yard early one morning after their poodle a few months back. He has no fence but luckily was outside when it happened. He installed a motion sensor spot light at the back of his property, and has had no more problems, but not sure that is the reason.

Hadn't thought about that, I could mount some motion sensing lights at the back of the property.

Have you marked your territory to let them know who is the boss?

We never would leave the pups in the yard by themselves. Not even at 8 weeks or so. They had too many other things to get them into trouble. (Rattlesnakes etc). Our yard was fenced with 4 ft tite lock net wire.
Are they little pups like terriers or chihuahuas
or something?

There is nothing legal I can offer up for getting rid of a coyote inside of city limits… Additionally, any sort of poisoning for said coyote is way more likely to hit a neighbors cat, dog, or even your own dogs.

Easy… I grew up in the country just shooting 'em. I was trying to find a more subtle way to go about it.

I'm not going to pull up any of the past threads, but all experts say killing coyotes does nothing but make you feel better. Either solve the food source, or safeguard you pet.

I live like 3 miles from downtown Houston and even we see coyotes pretty regularly.

Not sure how you could ever eradicate them. Even if you do, more will come and fill their spots.

I was in one of the Allen Parking garages last week and remembered about the coyote that was spotted on the top of one of them not long ago. I imagine they run up and down Buffalo Bayou and feast on all sorts of urban critters.

It being Saturday night and all, I thought the only way to get rid of a coyote was to chew your arm off…

A wise man named ursus once said that when a coyote dies, it's only a matter of time before another one comes in takes the vacant territory as it's own.

A decade or so ago our subdivision had a thread on coyotes similar to this one. We had an owner stupid enough to say he was shooting them at night off his balcony with a 22.....and he was.

That cost him $30,000.

Reading a book called Coyote America. It tells the history of Coyotes in North America.

They're probably the only species that has been targeted for eradication with barely a noticeable difference in their population. Extremely smart critters that some natives worshipped. It's estimated that over 90% of all Americans are within a mile of a coyote due to their prevalence in cities.

I mean that advice is asking how to illegally kill the local wildlife to let his puppies play….

Oh because we never discuss or even advocate for less than legal means to deal with problems here on the OB.
