A woman used a fake ID for the rental. She also paid with cash which is against company policy but the employee did not follow that policy. I would guess she could've provided a stolen credit card anyway. Hope they catch this scum.

Umm. If it's a full auto MP5 that value is off by an order of magnitude.

more than that. MP5 in decent working condition would be closer to $35-40k, no?

How did anyone walk out with something like that?

Every time I've gone to a range and shot full auto, I've had a range monitor basically with their hand on me and one hand on their hip the entire time.

Y'all don't actually think law enforcement is paying for their gear the artificial scarcity transferrable rate of $40k that they impose on us? $2.5k is probably pretty close for a dealer sample.

I've never rented a gun at a range, let alone a full auto, but I figured there had to be some better security in place than what the article states.

I've rented my share, and for standard hand gun rentals i've never had more than them holding onto my credit card and driver's license until i returned the rental.

One time though, I went to Tactical Firearms in Katy and rented a full auto MP5 to shoot at their range. For that rental I had one of their instructors with me for the whole rental period. Said instructor also helped loading mags while I shot, which was bitter sweet because it meant less down time shooting, but also helped me burn through $200 in 9mm ammo VERY quickly.

For a civilian transferable MP5, sure. Those are expensive due to artificial supply constraints from NFA rules.

Ranges like this are almost certainly NOT dealing within that same constraint. Proper dealer/manufacturer licensing allows a lot of other new build options that don't come with ridiculous price tag on an individual gun, just a bunch of other ridiculous constraints and costs.

Much more likely they took an SP5 and put a $100 machine gun pack in it. Either way, you're right, it's most certainly a post-sample and the value is correct

No FFL is going to put a transferable MG in their rental fleet

She (and I'm assuming the driver of the truck), or somebody they know, has been to that range before. Parked where they knew cameras weren't aimed, made sure the tailgate was down when leaving, probably knew that employee wasn't up to speed and could get away with cash.

Pretty soon it wouldn't surprise me if ranges that rent guns require a fingerprint upon rental because of this situation.

I'm pretty surprised they let someone shoot a rental machine gun without a range officer there with them while shooting. That seems to be the norm at the ranges I've been to that rent full auto. Ensures people don't lose control and shoot others and also ensures the guns won't walk away

Ball cap, never looked up, parked where no cameras, and tail gate down. This was a skilled thief.
LP probably fake. License of person who died in fire accidentally or murdered/cover up.

Still not clear how she just walked out. Is the range outside with no escort or forced ingress/egress through the store?

Clerk should have clued in on only 50 rounds @ 800 rounds a minute, with two mags the party would have been over in less than 10 seconds.

EDIT looks more like 2 boxes and only one magazine so my last statement should be cut. Still thats like 7 seconds of shooting and however long it takes her to load the mag.

No kidding. This makes no sense. How does she nonchalantly walk out with it tucked under her arm? Was the (former) employee the only one on staff? Was he taking a dump?

Gun range rentals are Post Samples. Different rules than transferable guns.
Probably only worth $2-3K, probably worn out.

Transferable MP5 are in the $35K range.
I had a Fleming sear and sold it a few years along with six host guns for it.

If someone wanted to illegally obtain a full auto, wouldn't it be easier to perform the illegal conversion in a machine shop than on camera?

Most likely she will be caught. If she (or her handler) were smart enough to completely evade, they would be smart enough to just modify an existing gun, or buy one black market.

Full auto 9mm long gun is sorta dated as far as functionality. Modifying an AR would make more sense.

The affidavit says detectives determined the ID card actually belonged to a woman who died in a fire last December.
It says by searching social media accounts for that woman and her family, they determined that Herring was her sister.
They believe Herring used her dead sister's ID during the theft.
That is messed up... and also not that bright.
