They're playing footsie over the first new music release by Turnpike Troubadours since 2017. It's damn good and hopefully the rest of the album will be great, too.

Thanks. I'm a fan. I'll check it out.

It's damn solid for sure.

I'm glad he's got his demons more under control now but I don't think Turnpike will ever quite be the same.

No idea why you would assume that. You said it yourself that it is a great song. I have seen lots of artists take a break for someone to get clean and come back and be as good or better than ever.

Solid /= great

It doesn't stand up to their old stuff to me and pretty much everyone I know that's been to a concert since they started playing again has said it's not the same.

Some artists take a break and come back the same or better, sure. But there's also a pretty high link between great artists and their problems.

I'd much rather him be better and healthy, but glad I got the chance to see Turnpike multiple times 5 -10 years ago.

Fair enough. After I posted, I realized I kind of stretched your words. I personally think that song is up there with their best stuff ever but I realize that it's just my opinion.

They played here, in Lubbock last week. Best show I've seen in many, many years. Unbelievable sound.

PS- we've got Jason Isbell tomorrow night at the new Buddy Holly Center.

I saw them at hlsr this year and it was honestly one of the few times I actually enjoyed a show there. Maybe it was because it had been so long, but I enjoyed it nonetheless

While I would not say this is their best song, I do think it is absolutely outstanding, and is up there with some of their best. Very exciting, and I see no reason to think their best days are behind them.

They aren't leaning into the punch as much as they used to, but not every song needs to be a knockout.

It's a good song that I think taken in context is a great sign.

Back to back night shows at The Beacon Theatre in NYC with Hayes Carll in July just got announced. What a great pair at an awesome venue.

the new record is supposed to be more or less of a story of Evans struggles and his path to sobriety. I would suppose a lot of what we get are these type of introspective songs with a deeper meaning and no stories about Lorrie. Normally I would be disappointed to hear something like this but Evan's way with words could make it interesting.

I disagree with the comment about the concerts not being the same.

For context, I've seen them twice since they got back together. Red Rocks and Rodeo Houston. Before the hiatus, I saw them at Harry's in CS, Harvest Maroon Fest in CS, Bix Texas Saloon in Spring and a few other places.

Red Rocks was amazing. The music was fantastic, they played and sounded amazing. The only noticeable difference I observed was the lack of a handle of whisky being passed around the stage during the show like they used to do.

Rodeo Houston was alright. The acoustics at NRG are ass and they had a short set list, assuming it was a set show time based off Rodeo Houston's requirements. Two things brought the quality of the show down, both outside of Turnpike's control.

In my opinion, Turnpike was never a band that did a lot on stage besides drinking and playing badass music. Now they get on stage, Felker strums his guitar, Nix wears the fiddle out and they play amazing music. Felker was never one to engage the crowd a lot and he is still that way. They let their music be the center of the performance.

Sound is up to the band during sound check. Quality of sound varies greatly at NRG.

I don't disagree, but Rodeo Houston has always had sound issues since leaving the dome. I've been going to HLSR my entire life and can't remember a concert with great sound.

There were several that were great this year. And several that were horrible. Turnpike was the worst by far (sound tech wise). And that included the rappers.

Doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the show after about song 3.

Saw them at Billy Bobs and Koke Fest last year. They're easily just as good.

Mean Old Sun is a great song. I'm assuming he's referring to when he split with his wife and went down to work on a south Texas ranch. Can't wait for the full album
