I have a pair of hawks(red shouldered I think) that have kept a nest in the pine tree in my front yard for the past few years. Last year three eggs hatch and it was neat seeing the fuzzy chicks turn into uncoordinated young hawks and learning how to fly in the back yard. It is lots of fun to see them swoop around, often carrying critters. One dropped a five-lined skink the other day while I was hanging on the patio. I find plenty of pieces of critters, usually partially eaten, around their nest. They left a gift on my truck this morning that was less pleasant!

Bonus snake ID opportunity

Eastern hognose snake carcass. The toad might have fallen out of the snake. Hognoses eat almost exclusively frogs and toads.

Also your red shouldered hawk ID is spot on.

Black out your VIN and license # on your registration. This IS the Outdoors Board and you might already be signed up for cat facts and having a truck tool box delivered COD tomorrow.

Wish I had a hawk nest that close, very cool experience to watch them like that. We had a screech owl mama and owlettes for a couple of years and they would turn up in the weirdest places before they fledged and left.

Got a few photos of one of the birds in action yesterday. These are some stone cold snake killing hawks!

Very cool. That toad is partially digested, definitely came out of the stomach of the snake.

Will hawks eat chihuahuas?

I've read they won't but I've heard stories that they will.

I can't think of much worse than a snake falling from the sky on top of me, regardless of whether it's dead or alive.

Sweet pictures though.

The aggie game a few years back where all the spiders came parachuting in during the 2nd half was pretty much my personal nightmare scenario.

My fianc is a city girl and owns a chihuahua. If I move her out to the country and a hawk eats her dog I'm gonna be in some trouble.

I know somebody that works for TPWD, and they actually got a call from a toy chihuahua owner asking what they could do to get their dog back from a hawk that swooped into their back yard and flew away with their dog. "How long ago did this happen?" "About 5 minutes ago." "Can you still see the dog?" "No, it flew away with the dog." "Uhmm..."

I posted this a while back when it happened, but this red tailed hawk decided to snatch an entire squirrel's nest out of my neighbors tree. Flew over to another neighbor's rooftop and had a feast of baby squirrels. It's a little hard to see, but he's got the nest in his talons while flying to his lunch spot.

You can see in this pic he's struggling a bit to get altitude, but he eventually got high enough to land on a roof across the street. I thought my wife was going to be upset seeing the demise of the baby squirrels, but she just said "well, it's not like there's a shortage of squirrels around here." Nature is metal.

Neighbor used to have a fat Chihuahua - I mean thick and dense - named Rex. One day a buddy and I are in driveway cleaning fish which I guess got the attention of the resident Hawk. Rex was sunning himself in their front yard, teets up out cold, and the hawk landed on the peak of the roof right above him. It sat there do 10-15 minutes staring at Rex turning its head side to side. It looked like he was trying to do the calculus on whether he could get that fat little thing airborn. Rex's owner finally saw it when he swooped down to a tree branch for a closer look. She ran across the yard and literally threw herself on top of the dog scooped him up and took him in. Is it wrong the we just cracked a beer and laughed our butts off watching it go down……

We had hawks nest in our front oak a few years ago. It was so awesome to watch. Squirrel population also went down.

Watching the chick's learn to fly and hunt was also super cool.

We had a relative come out to our hunting lodge for a reunion and she had a Chihuahua she was letting run around with one of those little harnesses where you snap the leash onto the strap on the back.

I told her that the Bald Eagles I'd been seeing around would appreciate her giving them a nice carrying strap for their meal. She got the point and the dog stayed inside for the rest of the weekend except for potty breaks on a leash.
