Our roads have gone to hell

As a kid my dad used to comment on how great Texas roads were.

Lately, my experience on our state highways have been less than stellar.

During the fall the surface of Hwy. 59 from George West to FM 624 started to deteriorate badly. Straddling the centerline or hugging the shoulder stripe was necessary to avoid lengthy surface potholes. Emailed and called TxDOT, seems they have patched some but not all. Kind of half assed. Will be contacting the county office again.

I drive from SA to Seguin and back weeekdays for work. The stretch of I-10 through Seguin is severely potholed in areas, too. Like front-end damaging potholes. Totally unacceptable. I'm going to go full Karen in the Guadalupe County office, too.

We can do better. And rant over.

This country has gone to hell so it makes sense.

Drive FM 624 through McMullen County . I've been on smoother rides in the Gulf of Mexico.

Aren't they doing a ton of road construction in that stretch? If so, they laid temp roads.

I haven't checked lately, but Texas roads still are far better than what passes for 'Interstate' quality in Mississippi and Louisiana.

Those things are a blessing to any shop doing suspension work and front-end alignments.

The construction is west of Seguin. He is talking about in and east of Seguin. I agree it is very rough.

OSR, which is a state highway, was so neglected and so bad they had to lower the speed limit to 60 because people were bouncing off the road.

So finally they repaved it. But inexplicably they left large sections only partially complete. They left just a thin layer on top of the road base and potholes started reappearing almost immediately.

They patched these and repatched them but after the recent rains it got really bad, so they brought a bunch of equipment out and put down fresh blacktop.

And you're left thinking, you know if TxDOT had just fixed the road the right way all the way instead of trying to save money and do a halfway job on some stretches, they wouldn't be out here spending additional taxpayer dollars fixing the mess the contractors left.
Trump will fix it.

Your username is why you're so jaded. SA roads are horrific. Had a two week stent there for work and almost lost my mind. Damn near destroyed my truck. Idk how people live there

I just drove the stretch you are talking about, OP. Pulling an RV no less. It was miserable.

San Antonio roads/streets are pretty terrible. Nearby, I-10 between Comfort and Boerne is in horrible condition, especially the bridges. I don't remember these highways being in such bad condition years ago.

Yes sir, you are spot on. Specifically, west bound 10 from 123 bypass to 725.

If you drive 10 eastbound from SA through the Marion exit the entire stretch from 1604 is under construction, stay in the left lane. The right lane is crap.

Drove that yesterday. It's getting better. The last remaining portion of the construction is just south of Seguin.

I drove that stretch from 16 to to 59 one night during deer season when it was misting rain. The road condition and west bound 18 wheelers raised the pucker factor up a notch for sure.

Try driving streets in Corpus….. SA roads are smooth as ice compared to that armpit. Also the Eagleford oil carriers tore up all the ranch roads S of SA and only a few have been repaired.

So the benchmark should be the absolute worst roads around? Not saying much…

Come drive in San Marcos. In 13 years I've replaced suspension components in 4 cars
