I wouldn't bring up the chickens just yet but go with the route of checking out other structures in the neighborhood and asking to build a shed. Then that shed just happens to be a chicken coop. Or don't ask at all and just go with the chicken tractor.

Talked to the president of the board. He is of the opinion they are not forbidden based on the DR… but try not to be obnoxious and annoy your neighbors.

He said to submit the coop to ARC for approval and if they deny because they are "not allowed" to let him know. I can appeal to BOD.

Just keep in mind unless you have it in writing, those conversations never happened when it matters.

Quail for the win
Specifically the Texas A&M breed of Coturnix quail. Bigger, meatier, fast growing and white for easier plucking. These are phenomenal birds if you are in the meat and egg quail business.

When I was at A&M I was one of those charged with cleaning and feeding the quail houses. Your right. Coturnix were easy to raise and began laying (if I remember correctly) at 12 weeks of age. Had quail quite often for me and the roomies. Pheasant was also another that graced our plates from time to time!
Those were the days!

I get it. But he didn't say, "Oh, yeah., there's an amendment that prohibits chickens."

Where? An Amendment would be with the rest of the rules.

I'm considering backyard chickens. My plan was to put the coop under the swingset, where the kids don't go anymore.

The "floor" of the playset is about 4' high. Its where the slide connects. I was just going to install a floor and a little chicken ramp and enclose it.

Mine is very similar to this:

It's my understanding that in Texas a city or municipality can't prevent you from keeping 6 or fewer chickens… but an HOA can. Is that correct?

I was hoping to get some chickens but my neighbor, who is a member of the ARC, said they are not allowed. I've read restrictions and I don't see that the chickens are prohibited but I can see that a coop could be a problem. Our yards are not fenced (and I don't want to fence my property) and he can see my whole yard. No way I'm sneaking a coop onto my property.

Is my understanding of the law correct?
He told you its not allowed because HE doesn't want it. There is nothing worse than someone with only a minor amount of authority.

Do the free range thing, then he'll want the coop.

I have found out a couple of things from years of backyard chicken raising.

1. You never have the right amount of eggs. You either have WAY too many, or not enough.

2. Neighbors who may object are placated with a preemptive gift of eggs from time to time.

Centerpole that coop is redass. My dad built our chicken tractor years ago. I painted it to look like the Aggie Barn but with his class year ('65)

A Texas A&M breed of quail? Are they expensive but underperforming? Shouldn't they be maroon?
the chicks are very dumb

like they are born trying to find a place to die

So buying a bunch of these and releasing them on my property in E TX isn't likely to result in a thriving population I take it?

As someone with experience with this….

Don't talk to HOA.

1.Get the chickens
2. Register them as "emotional support animals" on the web
3. Threaten to sue the HOA or ARC if they say anything about them
4. Keep your neighbors happy with free eggs and no rooster.

Update on the law trying to be passed again this year. Has stalled out on the senate a few years in a row.

But email your state rep. Specifically Senate. Need to finally get a state law passed to protect backyard egg production.
