Glad this post popped up. I'm actually in the market for a used Leupold. Where is the best place to pick up a used VX1 or VX2? I don't need anything fancy since I am coming from a 1964 Weaver K4. The VX1 I bought recently from an Ag is, frankly, phenomenal, and it didn't cost much.

EDIT: Just saw the RokSlide post. I like it!

I usually have pretty good prices on Leupold and just drop ship them to you. Woda has abused me on them.

I don't want vintage necessarily, I just don't want to spend more than 300 on a scope. The ones I've bought that are VX one or two Lupold's for under 200 have looked pretty dang good. Plus, I'm not shooting squirrels at 700 yards. Most everything is under 200 yards. 90% is under 100 yards.

If you go the used route with Leos, confirm the serial number with Leupold prior to purchase.

Counterfeiting is an issue.

I wanted a leupold until I read the long distance shooting forum in Rokslide. The badass snipers there don't rate them very high due to poor tracking when making adjustments. Glass is fine but internals often get overlooked when choosing a scope. I want a scope that I can rely on adjustments being accurate.

Anyway if anyone wants to see check out the long distance forum and stickied at top is scope reviews.

Depends on what you want it for. Leupold uses the same style mechanism as most scopes. Nightforce uses a band style.

For hunting application where you will not be making a lot of adjustments, leupold is hard to beat. They are about 50% lighter than comparable scopes.

If you are going to shoot F Class I would go with something else.

The adjustments work just fine out to 600 yards.

I don't doubt long distance shooters/snipers don't rate the Leupold that high… it's a hunting scope company first that migrated into long range stuff. I'd much rather have to compromise on some of the longer range adjustments and still be able to see earlier and have better clarity on my scope.

99% of my shots are going to be under 600 yards and if I go beyond that, it is going to be something like a pig or an Aoudad that I couldn't care less about exact shot placement. I'd imagine most hunters are the same and those truly poking out farther already run Nightforce, S&B or something similar.

Who says you can't have both? A scope that accurately tracks and great glass. A few options that do and same cost as leupold.

Reviews from long range hunters- good forum for those interested in shooting better.

I'm not saying you can't have both. I'm saying that I'm a hunter first and that's what I use my scopes for 99% of the time. Because of that I am willing to side with a company that has a richer history and track record with making quality hunting scopes over someone that has a history primarily with target/long range precision.

You said you thought you've heard of issues with Leupold… I have not seen anything personally on several guns out to 600 or so yards.

I'm sure there are great alternatives out there but I'm going with tried and true every time, especially in that price range.

Do any of these do it at the same or less weight? While also having the option for a simple hunting reticle? If so, I'd definitely consider them.

Not that I have found. That does not mean they do not exist.
