I haven't been lately but planned on trying it out later this week. If I go I'll post it here.
didn't want to quote the picture, but that's a huge yellow. Nice fish.

all these pics (and catches of my own) of dinky Texas whites makes me miss the white bass run/summer schoolers we'd catch out of the Mississippi River lakes in north LA/Mississippi.

It was nothing to fill the boat up and have a 2lb per fish average back home. 12 inchers woulda been tossed back without a second thought.

My last fishing trip on Eagle Lake a few years ago, BIL and I thought we were catching hybrids under lights and only kept 5 each. We got home to clean all those and had 10 3+ lb whites.

Thanks! Yeah I was stoked. I had never caught them in Texas and I was out in Arizona to do my fantasy football draft and some trout fishing on Mogollon rim with a friend who lives in Mesa, AZ.

We finished packing for the rim early and decided to specifically target yellows at a local lake and hauled in a good one. Only one, but it was a success in my book. Also caught my first "and only" tiger trout up on the rim later in the trip. It was a good trip.

I caught a green sunfish in a lake in CA in the Sierra foothills used for logging operations and along with that...who the hell brought yellow bass and green sunfish to those on purpose?

Dunno, but that lake where I caught the yellow bass was so full of bluegill and green sunfish that I spent most of my time pulling those guys off the hook instead.

They are there but they aren't easy to pull out. Waaay more females now. They are still full of eggs.

When you come down the steps you go to the right and keep wading upstream, correct?

Can someone educate me on the "order" of the run? Do the males come first and then the females? How long is the delay between the 2? How long does all this last?

Reason I am asking is this years catch hasn't followed the same pattern I remember from past years. I have been fishing the Angelina regularly since early February - like almost weekly. Started out normal - slow and catching small males only. Last weekend in February we had a great day catching 40 between 2 of us but only a few females. March 9th we caught a 2 man limit all big fish but only 16 females and they had eggs. Missed last week and Thursday (23rd) absolutely slayed'em getting 50 in around 3 hours. That is when you know it is on bigtime catching big fish fast and we just knew the run was in full swing, but when we cleaned them there were only 7-8 females and it looked like their egg sacks were empty. So where are the big females full of eggs? Have we missed them or are they just getting started? Only missed 1 week so Hard to believe missed all the females?

You have the order down correctly. In your part of the state, my guess is the peak has passed.

We have always seen 3-4 weeks of catching majority big females full of eggs. Hard to believe we missed it with only 12-13 days between trips...... I was hoping the females haven't all made it in yet...

I generally wade cross the river and go left but you can go either way.

You seem to have the order right. I know up here the females seem to be staging for the heaviest part of the run (full of dark eggs) which generally only lasts a week or two, but the fish will be there until longnose gar start their big run.

They hang around upriver feeding on minnows, shad, and carp/Buffalo eggs after they spawn until the water gets too warm which is around when the longnose gar start their run.

The fish are easiest to catch during spawning and immediately after spawn which is generally a period of about four weeks total, but are still there for people who wanna work to catch fish for about a month after the main bite has slowed down. There is a lot of bycatch late in the run of mostly carp, buffalo, and freshwater drum, all of which put up a great fight.

We got scunked today. Some guys throwing live bait had a decent stringer. An older man throwing a white rooster tail had about 10 but took him 4 hours to bag those.

Yeah it's not easy to pull them out right now. I was there for a long time yesterday and the bite only really turned on for about two hours before sunset.

Temperatures are predicted to reach 90 degrees next Tuesday. With the full moon coming up the shad spawn may get kicked off on the main lake. The island at Welsh park is a great place to catch hybrids and white bass early mornings and late evenings. Sometimes they are so thick they are surfacing all around you when you wade out a short ways. Nothing more fun than catching hybrids on a fly rod on the open lake.

I fished Travis last Saturday, and couldn't find them. Only got 1, where I was catching them constantly 2 weeks before. They moved on me but not sure where.

I went back to the steps yesterday and the fishing was even harder. I only caught around ten. The keepers were better size but fewer fish were there. The shad have barely moved up and the shiner aren't running yet. I did see some white bass starting to spawn.

Anybody try the steps in the last few days since the rain. I tried right before and couldn't get them to take anything. They were still there cuz I saw some chasing a few sunfish I hooked but I only hooked one undersized white.

Made my first trip over there. I was down in Georgetown with the family for the weekend. My youngest daughter and I decided we wanted to go check it out. We were out there on Saturday. Problem was we got there with only about a half hour of daylight left! Caught a decent one on my second cast. Not much action after that. A couple of groups that were leaving as we arrived seemed to do pretty well though.

Thanks... might give it a go later this week.

Decided to try my luck at Colorado Bend instead of the steps. Water is crazy low, but the fish still ran. They are post spawn now and pretty beat up. Carp are thick in there. I hooked a bunch but only landed three.
