On a good, year round river. Mason county and the Llano River for me. Year round fishing, turkey hunting and plenty of rocks.
agree 100% except a little South in Kimble county. Live water and Turkeys - good deer everywhere in those counties

I'll take something along the Nueces in LaSalle or McMullen Co.

I wouldn't turn down the Neches in Polk Co. Either!!

The Cimarron Valley Ranch is for sale in what was at one time Texas, and still just a few miles away...

I have seen this listing online for a while now, looks like such an awesome place.

We hunted the Cimarron Natl. Grasslands in Morton County KS just a few miles from there and always did well on bobs down in the Arkansas River bottom. Wish they could get a break from the drought in SW KS. SE CO is in the same boat drought wise.

Not sure about best deer hunting experience but if you are asking for the "best quality deer" thats an easy answer.
By the numbers its webb and dimmit county. If you look on google maps in this area just zero in on the red dirt and you will find the big deer. It should be called red triangle instead of golden triangle.

"To most hunters the "Golden Triangle" is synomomous with giant whitetail deer. So what is the golden triangle? The golden triangle is an area in deep South Texas that encompasses Dimmit, LaSalle, Maverick, Zavala, and Webb county. This area of South Texas or "triangle" is recognized for trophy buck potential and its history of many book deer harvested each year. Webb and Dimmit county hold the number 1 and number 2 all- time record book buck producing counties in the United States by Boone and Crocket."

If I'm spending $45 Million dollars on land in Colorado, it sure as hell isn't going to be flat, pasture land that has to be irrigated.

I'd rather buy this, knock down that ugly ass monstrosity of a house or carve it out on 100 acres, and not buy it at all instead.

Yes that is correct. But if I could afford any ranch I wanted in Texas, I could afford to make the kind of offer someone couldn't refuse.

For others viewing pleasure..

Another one I dreamed of having is this one. I'm not sure if it finally sold or if it was just taken back off the market. My Grandad and his brothers owned a ranch that was next to this one. Some of our family still owns it.

Check out texasbuckregistry.com for pics all over the state - one county that I was surprised by for monster deer on low fence ranches…Shackelford, NE of Abilene
Glad to see all the love for my former hunting / stomping grounds. Generations of great management from some legendary ranches -- Matthews, Nail, Cook-Stasney -- have made those deer.

We used to hunt a lot of the adjacent land for free. When there were parties at one of the ranches, we would take the trucks out and spotlight (not shoot, of course). The monster bucks you would see just a few yards away from the roads were just ridiculous.

I guess that part of the country isn't for everyone, and beauty is in the eye of the beerholder.

Most of us couldn't ever afford it, but it doesn't cost anything to dream i guess.

You don't have to irrigate, you get to irrigate. Center pivot irrigation is so much more productive. There is a night and day difference in our customers who irrigate and those who dryland farm. It's the irrigated farms that trading for new equipment on a regular basis, and the dryland guys are buying older used equipment and hanging on to it for years and years. The difference is especially noticeable this year in the drought. A lot of the dryland guys didn't even harvest anything this fall, but the irrigated guys have crops to sell.

Hay of any quality is hard to come by this year. Those irrigated alfalfa fields should give you 4 to 5 cuttings a year. That should be enough to feed your cattle through the winter, and leave you with hay to sell for a premium. It's a pretty sweet setup.

I would bet that if you were offered a 200 class mule deer hunt on that place, you would take it

I'll take the hill country over south Texas any day. Trophy hunting requires lots of time and work. Used to really enjoy chasing big horns.

I'd pick someplace close to wherever I want to call home. It would be large enough to high fence, have year-round running river/creek, good topology and a good browse habitat.

And then I'd import the herd as needed. South Texas whitetail, elk, axis, etc.

Being in DFW now, that would likely be on the Brazos in Jack or Palo Pinto counties.

I'd be the opposite.

It would be my refuge from the BS of life. If I can afford whatever ranch I want, I can also afford a plane, runway, and hanger that allows for the ability to escape.

Hell, I was on a ranch last month that had all the above, and the owner described it as a small operation.

Sounds on point. In addition to my plowed sunflower fields for dove season and stocked tanks for fishing and ducks, I'd also clear out and sod three fairways and greens (each with 3 tee boxes at par 3, 4 and 5 distances) for my own golf course.
