Wife is looking for a Christmas Gift List from me. Really, want for not much anything. Got a LyfeTime "pit", Weber propane grill, and a PK Original, so grilling and BBQ is covered for the most part. However, like some of the options (steaming/grilling with FireDisc in particular with add ons like the top). Did not see that with RTIC. Saw a version at HEB with two actual "levels" at half the price of the FireDisc/RTIC.

So, does anyone have either, both? Is the breakdown convienence worth it? The RTIC disc is carbon steel according to reading. What about the FireDisc?

Input appreciated OB

Have a Fire disc and have been happy with it. They've been running promos pretty constantly lately, there are some deals to be had.

Was seeing that. The "Classic" which looks to be scratch and dent. Got no issue with scratches on Stainless. However the "dent" issue could be a deal killer if in the wrong place.

You can try https://www.southwestdisk.com/ though. Several people here on OB have one now. Vet owned and priced right. Similar to Firedisc but half the cost. It's been recommended and food for thought for ya.
Was planning on getting one and then ended up in an apartment again. Still going to be my first choice. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Yeah, I'm probably the reason that those are marked final sale and scratch and dent now.

They sent me two different units, both were damaged inside the box, but still fully functional. The edge of the disc had some small dents in it and the paint was scratched off where the legs rubbed against the disc in the box (both units). They replaced the first one with the second, and told me to recycle or donate the first. With the second one, they sent me a touch-up pen and my choice of a free accessory.

Two weeks later the clearance bundles were all marked final sale, and I see now that they no longer ship them, they're only available at the storefront.

I cleaned both the units up, one with a dremel grinding wheel and the other with just the touch up pen. Now my brother and I both have them.

I will say, I have trouble maintaining a low enough fire on my Firedisc - long cooks I end up cycling the fire on and off. I've found a few tips to help adjust it, but haven't gotten it quite dialed in yet.

My local ag shop sells discs with or without holes welded up. You can bu that and then weld on a horseshoe for what I believe is a fraction of the cost of one of the mass produced jobs. What's the draw to SW or Firedisc? Prettier?

A tall stand/burner (standing height) that comes with it, and a catalog of accessories that already fit it and are ready on the shelf.

Plus living in the suburbs and not necessarily have a local ag shop.

The welded up plow disc is a perfectly acceptable option, if you have access and can fab up a few other things yourself.

We've cooked on a disc cooker for years and loved it but recently switched over to a flat top and haven't looked back.

More versatile with much more room

We're using the Blue Rhino Razor 4 burner

I have a childhood friend who is making disc cookers and selling them on Facebook. I am not sure what he is selling them for but give him a call and find out. His name is Will Handy and is in Beeville his number is 361-354-3434.

Having built some myself, welding up the shaft hole and smoothing it down are very labor intensive. If you're better with a welder and torch than I am, maybe less so. And unless it's a brand new disk from the farm store, you're going to have to spend some time sanding the rust pits out. Seasoning is needed, too. I did add horseshoe handles.

Then you have to build a stand, getting it stable, but still storable, getting the angles correct to hold the curved disc. Buy a burner, figure out how to mount it to the stand. Figure out how to make it adjustable so you get the cooking speed you want. Probably need a wind guard.

I had fun building a few, but too much labor to mass produce for sale. Again, a better welder than I could probably do better.

Gotcha. Yeah, forgot about the stand. That is a teency bit important. I did fab one of those up from rusty pipe. Not pretty, but it works awesome. Plus when it's painted it has that rustic "hammered bronze" look to hide ugly welds. HAHAH

I thought the disc could be purchased from the manufacturer without a hole. It seems they ship some out prior to drilling for exactly this purpose. So no welding it up. Actually, now that I think of it, it was in Hondo at the steel supply shop. They had the discs ready to go, aside from the horseshoe handle. As for the stand and burners. No issue. But I have no requirements for weight, wind, or collapsible. If yours does that, then that's badass. Mine is just drill stem pipe with feet and rebar welded on to hold the disc. LOL. It ain't fancy!

COSCAG00 has a design that looks more elegant and robust than what I came up with. Any DIY guys, I found the old thread where I detailed the building process.

Some good ideas, some bad, you can learn from both.

I got an RTIC one for my birthday and bought a couple of the FireDisc accessories that work perfectly with it. It is really well built and easy to cook/clean. We got it for the portability and I think if I had it to do over again, I would have bought the shorter FireDisc for the same price

I will say, one advantage the RTIC or FireDisc has over the plow disc is the lip around the edge. The FireDisc claims it has a 5 gallon capacity - I haven't measured it, but I don't doubt the claim. Less food slips off the side, and you can definitely pile it up in there.

I did a big batch of jambalaya in mine, and, except for the issues with getting the burner down low enough like I previously mentioned, it worked out really well. Did I mention that when they offered me a free accessory I chose the lid? It might have been the most expensive one out there at the time.

One disadvantage is the lip around the edge. It's harder to get a utensil under something up on the outer edge of the disc.

I'm mixed on some of the FireDisc "Weapons" - the scoop is great, but it's just a wok scoop, you can get them for quite a bit cheaper. We've yet to test out the "Ultimate Frying Weapon" - but it looks like a decent option for retrieving fried food from the oil. The others are a bit bulky in the hand - the tongs I especially dislike. It is nice that they all have the bottle opener hooks to hang them on the lip of the disc when not in use (especially because we often take ours camping, and a clean space to set a utensil is at a premium).

Don't have much to add or help the Op, but whatever you do get you'll like it. Shoutout to Centerpole90 for hooking me up with a couple of discs, he's a good guy.

I have cooked breakfast and all the usual things on mine, the most recent time I used it, we did chicken friend steaks. Mess is a lot easier to cleanup outside in the driveway instead of in the kitchen.

I can and do fab things. But with my discada, I went lazy and bought it from Academy for $40.

We fried a mess of flounder not too long ago at deer camp with mine. Made cooking easy, used a lot less oil and was all around awesome. My buddy had never seen one used outside of making breakfast and was hella impressed, especially with how we could pull the filets that were done out of the oil and let them set for a bit towards the upper lip to drain without overcooking them.

Between it and the blackstone, we can cover approximately 95% of all cooking needs at camp. It's nice.

Didn't FireDisc spam the OB once and then periodically have people bring up posts like these comparing these two?

To be clear, Thisguy (no pun intended) did not participate in any spamming and the request for information was genuine.

I believe an Old Sarge who's been here since '99, it was pretty funny though. I think they either bumped or started like 50 threads on here about it. Then every so often someone would start a post with almost the same verbiage as yours and it was obviously someone working for them trying to start conversation about them.

I really appreciate the input OB. Here is what I am taking away:

There are some really good true "disc" options out there.

I do like the take-down stands from RTIC and Firedisc.

I am concerned about the seemingly uncontrollable heat in the center of the Firedisc. However, is this because of the optional windscreen or just overall?

Is the RTIC disc prone to the same issue with the almost uncontrollable heat in the center of the Firedisc?

I am liking the Firedisc accessories like the lid, and steam "basket" of the Firedisc. Obiviously, there are tools that can be bought from elsewhere to be used with both, not just the mfg.

Question for either stand: How adjustable are either to uneven ground (OB experience with the RTIC and/or Firedisc?
