How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hello all,

I need a recommendation for a firearm CLP (cleaner/lube/protectant). I used Ballistol for the first time last night (free can, so I might as well try it). Seemed to work pretty well, but I smelled that stuff all night, which isn't preferable since it really stinks. So in order to not be relegated to the garage the next time I am cleaning a firearm, I need to find something that doesn't smell up the place. Any suggestions based on actual experience would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a big fan of G96. It actually smells good. I want to spray it on my corn flakes.

I am very sensitive to smells and have asthma. I have tried several, and the only one that works for me is Break free CLP.

It's not a cleaner but if they made Rem Oil flavored beer there'd be a sixer in my fridge.

If you just mix a tablespoon of salt into 2 cups of hot water, and add a 1/2 teaspoon of vinegar- that will cover all of your needs. A few drops of mint essential oils, or whatever scent you like, will get the job done.

Recently made the switch to Lucas Oil. Big fan so far. It does a good job and doesn't stink.

I use frog lube on my duck hunting shotgun. It is the only thing I've tried that almost entirely prevents rust when i hunt in salt water. Believe it or not, it smells like mint.

They make these ready to use wipes that I hear smell nothing like gun oil.

So I have used Ballistol for a while now. We use it on everything too. Just in the last couple of weeks I have used it on a creaky ceiling fan and a stubborn trailer hitch.

What, other than the smell, makes G96 such a good product?

For the record in my 25 years of shooting I have only used Ballistol and a couple of different Hoppes products in my life.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions, and to CS78 for proving that in every group of people, there's always one *******.

I'd be careful using Frog Lube on any type of defensive gun. When it sits for a while, it starts to gum up. I've had it jam ARs before. It also collects tons of lint when pocket carrying or IWB.

I was one of the original distributors in Texas but dumped them after a few years when the gumming of my own guns started to show up.

Been using Aerokroil going on 20 years. Stuff works on everything and I don't mind the smell for what it can do.

Probably not wrong. If it has worked for you all these years, why change? Unless of course further use gets you banished to the garage.......

I bought a tube of frog lube after I read about it here on TexAgs. My carry gun looked like a used lint brush after a week. Tube went in the trash. Good to know it wasn't just my impression of the product.
