That will get the adrenaline pumping enough to finish that climb fairly quickly.

I hate to criticize that climber's performance - I'm sure he was doing his best - but I'm confident that if I was faced with that scenario, my screams would have been much shriller and much more full of terror.

Also, good Lord... climbing is hard enough & now you throw freaking bears into the mix?

It looks like the top of that peak was about the size of a table top. That bear probably got another shot at him on the way down.

Pretty sure that dude now can tell a story of kicking a bear's ass without the bear drawing blood. Between not falling off the mountain and coming through unscathed, dude will be a legend for the rest of his life

Juvenile bear, erego the behavior. Black bears will usually run tail the first real noise and aggression you show... at least in my experience.

Juvenile bears are idiots just like most teenagers.

I'd have been searching for a nice sized rock to relocate once I got to the top, oh and also probably changing my boxers. Holy smokes!

It seems like the bear just wanted to "play," right, and less like an attack? I wonder how much damage it would have inflicted.

How long did he stay up on the rocks before he felt safe enough to leave?! That would be a loooong walk back to the truck for me, even if I was carrying a sidearm or bear spray.

This proves Ursus' assertion that if a black bear attacks you, fight like hell and you have a good chance of fending it off. That guy LITERALLY punched and kicked a bear in the face, while hanging off a cliff. Beats the hell out of my story of hitting a bear in the face with a Lego Tyrannosaurus rex…

Also, that bear had a huge scar on its back, it looked like. Not it's first tussle I would reckon.

When hunting I always had the thought in back of my head I need to get this animal out of here as fast as I can. Never wanted to see a grizzly. I had many more run ins with black bears and found them to be so curious and you never knew which might get aggressive. This black bear looked average size not a young one but not super old either. I think that is a silver patch of hair on that bears back, or rock scraping discolored. Dude did an awesome job fending it off. Maybe a cub around the area had it on alert.

Mad props to the climber for fighting off a freaking bear mid climb and mad props to the bear for getting up and continuing the fight immediately after swan diving from 15' and landing on its head

Yeah, looked it up because terrain wise it looked like about a dozen different hikes I might do here in Virginia. But the plants on the rocks didn't look at all familiar - I would expect table top pines and other east coast elevation flora…, so I had to check.
And I guess it was a Japanese black bear.which is smaller than the American black bear. And also apparently not very common. So a remarkable encounter really in a lot of ways.

Must be hard to climb with balls that big.

Yeah, it is a sow with a cub. That being said, Asiatic black bears are a separate species that are known for being way more aggressive than our black bears. The guy did what he is supposed to and fought back.

Trauma of many sorts causes it. Car accidents I have seen both and have seen urination in fights.

I've seen grizzly bears fight each other and poop from the stress of the fight.

I knew a guy years ago that **** himself during an atv accident.
