Testing the waters here. Staff, let me know if this is off limits (though I think it should be okay considering I'm not trying to make any profit).

Over the last 9 months I've gone pretty far down the rabbit hole of fly tying, and at this point I think I've become fairly proficient. With my trout fly fishing season over for the year, my capacity to tie flies now exceeds my personal needs. I enjoy the hell out of it and would like to stay sharp until next summer by tying up some more bugs. Would anybody be interested in me tying up some trout flies for you? I'm not looking to make money, would only charge for approximate material cost and shipping.

My flies are generally going to be on par or better than what you can find in fly shops, and WAY better than the $0.95 flies you can find online. And they'll probably be cheaper. And they will use quality components (Tiemco or Firehole Sticks hooks, Whiting hackle, etc.). And they're tied by an Aggie sitting in Houston drinking Coors Light instead of a Nigerian sitting in Lagos drinking whatever Nigerians in a fly tying sweatshop drink.

It would work like this:

1) Tell me what you want. This could be anything like "tie me a dozen size 16 double wing caddises" or "tie me 6 random giant Galloup articulated streamers" or "tie me a dozen attractor nymphs in various sizes" or "I'm going to the Frying Pan River next July, tie me a variety pack of dry flies and terrestrials".

2) I tell you how long it will take me to tie and how much materials and shipping will cost

3) I tie and ship the flies and will take Venmo payment upon receipt

If anyone shows interest, I'll post my email to get in touch with me. Here are some of my bugs:

I'd be interested in some of those articulated flies. Do you do any saltwater?

Tie any for bass in stock tanks?
Grasshoppers, poppers, streamers?

Or bluegill flies?

I'm generally trying to stick to trout flies (I don't have many materials on hand for bass flies or saltwater). That may change in the future, and generally I find saltwater patterns easier to tie than trout patterns.

That said, I tie a ton of foam hoppers that would work really well for bass and panfish, and panfish like nymphs and wooly buggers as well. Big bass love articulated streamers too, just like big brown trout.

Brother, I will take you up on that! Earlier this summer I lost (suspect it got stolen) my main fly box with 3/4 of my flies. All my hoppers, copper Johns, elk hair caddis, pheasant tails, BWO's, foam ants, small parachute Adam's, zebra midges, Royal stimulators… I can't even remember what all was in there. I haven't been able to afford to replace them, except for a small few.

I live in southern CO, and fish most of the summer. In winter, we slip down to the quality waters on the San Juan and fish tiny flies for big fish- like #22-24 midge pupaes, red annelids, RS2, etc…

Let me put some thoughts into what patterns I would most use, and I'll hit you up for some, if you are able.

I'm in. We fish the rio grande outta south fork and some of the local drainages. So, let's start w a variety of beaded nymphs, hoppers, chubby Chernobyl's and San Juan worms (I know, so don't say it… they work) u can pm me.

I'm in.

I'm primarily a saltwater guy, but could use some bass and panfish flies. Clousers and Woolies, small nymphs for panfish. Small terrestrials or small gurglers would also work.

I'd never call them cool, but I'd be willing to tie them for someone.

I've never done any fly fishing, but from a looks point of view, they sure do look nice. Congrats on refining your craft so well.

I think I'm interested. I need to figure out what to ask you for though. We have a cabin near gunnison, Co and am still learning all the rivers near there. I need to build up a good supply.

ttt, since some folks might be planning summer trips right now.

I tied over 100 flies for DaveHimself last fall. Price winds up about on par with the cheapest Nigerian sweatshop flies you can find online, but tied by me in Texas, with better materials and hooks, and a better finished product (depending on how many Coors Lights I've had…kidding…sort of). I'm not making profit on these, just trying to get close to break even on material costs and getting better at tying.

Nice looking flies.

Since you are just getting started at tying flies commercially; be aware that the Sport Fisheries Restoration Act requires that you have an EIN for your business and you must file a Form 720 every quarter after you sell the first fly and pay a 10% federal tax on everything you sell in addition to whatever sales taxes are where you live. The IRS will definitely come looking for the 10% due to the USFWS if you list anything about fly tying or manufacturing any kind of fishing equipment on your tax return without having the EIN and having filed quarterly.

Upside is you can buy hooks and materials at wholesale directly from companies like Wapsi and Hareline with the EIN
