How long do you want to ignore this user?
Looking at doing a roadtrip in mid-late October to Sedona from Houston. Already been to terlingua, big bend, marfa, all the things. That being said, Ive already done some research on trails in Sedona that I would be comfortable doing, while still being able to drive it back home.

Looking for stopping points, prefer AirBNBs along the way, but am willing to do a hotel. Thinking about 8 hrs of driving each day, unless there is something I should stay longer for. I don't mind road-warrior-ing it out of/into Texas.

This will be a 7-10 day trip. Mid week to mid-end week but I'm flexible.

I say Rappy in case there are places it can't/won't fit in Sedona.

Looking for your input on:
cool places/eats
HAVE to do
trails
stopping points

Spend a lot of time traveling the roads from Houston to Albuquerque for work: Just a quick glance and Id personally recommend the following:

-Millers Smokehouse- Belton, TX
-Perini Ranch Steakhouse - Buffalo Gap (Abilene)
-Evie Maes BBQ- Lubbock
-Palo Duro Canyon State Park
-Caprock Canyon State Park
-Santa Fe Brewing- Albuquerque
-El Vado Motel (Rennovated motel with great craft beer bar)
-Driving up to the Sandia Crest is one of the best views this side of the Rockies

Id skip Albuquerque and stop in Santa Fe for the night instead. Tons of breweries to hop around Santa Fe as well.
-The Parador is a great AirBnB boutique hotel in an old stable
-For food: El Farol (near all the art galleries), Tia Sophias (Must have breakfast Burrito), Marias New Mexican Kitchen has my favorite chile dishes, Paloma is good if youre into the finer things.

Cant help you past Albuquerque but look forward to reading the recap!

Are you going out on I-10 and come up through Phoenix, or are you going the northern route and come in through Flagstaff and I-40?

I'd use the southern route, just to stay on major interstates. Houston --->> Abilene is a pretty boring drive (used to take that 10X + per year). Of course, West Texas on I-10 sucks too. But, I prefer southern NM and AZ over the latter. That's just me. Both are equally long.

I used to drive mostly Eastern NM alot, but we drove all the way to Vegas (northern route going there, southern route coming back). I think we stopped more places on the way there.

I've used All Trails when looking for trails to take my Raptor on. The photos are the most valuable thing to check. Many trails are great for a Jeep, but too narrow for a Raptor.

You guys will actually risk desert pinstripes? Most people with these things freak out if they get a little grocery cart scuff.

Granted, it's the same way with lots of Heep drivers, too.

That's big area of things to do. What route is probably the one you want to take? If you are going west, there's boatloads of stuff to drive and see in the deserts out in Az and Ut.

If taking southern route stop at La Posta in Mesilla for great New Mexican food.

I would also skip Albuquerque. It has very little redeeming qualities in comparison to Santa Fe.

For Southern Route, you might want to cut south of I-10 to Rodeo NM then over the mountains to the Chiricahua National Monument https://www.nps.gov/chir/index.htm from there you can head over to Tombsone before going back up to Tucson. Portal AZ Lodge is OK. Road across is closed in the winter though. In Rodeo, there is a museum with quite a bit of Geronimo's artifacts, etc.

Agree with stop in Mesilla. Owner of the La Posta also has the Hacienda de Mesilla down the road. Food is good at both locations (his son runs the Hacienda) and Hacienda is also a small inn.

At 8 hours of driving per day, you are looking at 3 days there and 3 days back, so 6 days of your 7-10 day trip are just driving.

I've made the southern/I-10 trip more times than I care to remember (used to live in Phoenix). Houston to about Ozona isn't bad, it gets pretty boring and bleak after that all the way through about Green Valley, AZ.

I used to drive to Ft. Stockton or Las Cruces to spend the night when I didn't drive all the way in one shot, then make the rest of the trip the next day. Ft. Stockton is almost exactly halfway to Phoenix.

On the I-10 route, you can swing down to Tombstone (a little out of the way admittedly), stop in Tucson to visit the aircraft boneyard or you could swing up 70 off of 10 and go through a more mountainous drive through Globe, etc. before hitting Phoenix.

The northern route takes longer because it isn't nearly as direct. If you go that way, visit the Loretta Chapel to see the staircase in Santa Fe. You can swing through Lincoln on the way and see some Billy the Kid history as well, walks the streets of Lincoln, etc.

I've done 5 of those 8 and agree with you.

Also agree with the guy that says it's a crap ton of driving. I'd say 5 days of driving, instead of 6, but either way it's a beating. And that's on the !-40, shortest route. Some other great suggestions, but if you do I-10, and/or the back roads, it adds even more drive time.

So I'll stick with the Google Maps routes. On 287 via Amarillo:

  • Charles Goodnight home
  • Palo Duro
  • Panhandle Plains Museum
  • Russel's Truck Stop and Car Museum, Endee, NM
  • Route 66 alignment in Tucumcari

Note I did not mention Big Texan or Cadillac Ranch

Lubbock Route (36 to I-20 to 84 to Santa Rosa)

  • Slaton Bakery
  • Slaton Harvey House B&B
  • Ranching Heritage Museum, Lubbock
  • Windmill Museum, LBB
  • Silent Wings Museum, LBB
  • Bosque Redondo, Fort Sumner
  • Billy the Kid's grave in Ft. Sumner...isn't
  • Blue Hole, Santa Rosa (5 minutes unless you are diving)
  • Santa Rosa Route 66 alignment
  • Truck Museum, Moriarity
  • Mags shooting range (fire full auto weapons) Moriarity
  • Sandia Crest
  • National Nuclear Museum, ABQ
  • Lots of great Mexican food in ABQ
  • Old Town
  • Bio Park

Sorry, have seldom been west of ABQ but Petrified Forest, Painted Desert are on my bucket list.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have some oak tree and dog claw pinstripes (when one jumped out the back window at the ranch because he saw his dog cousin and couldnt wait 30s for me to get around after stopping), but they are minor.

I don't really care about anything in ABQ as I made the route from El Paso to ABQ two times a couple years ago, and went to ABQ another 2-3 times a year out of that. Never made it to Santa Fe or anything besides on either side of White Sands (the eastern side is prettier and cooler with the ridge and traintrack, but more desolate).

Ill probably road warrior it out of Texas the first day. Go on the North Route there, south route back.

Def will take into account some of those stops.

Found this for Sedona...accurate or no? Sedona trail review

Ill probably do the Lubbock route as I went to Clayton NM a few years back and did most of the items either way in the Amarillo stretch, including Cadillac Ranch (meh, but cool photo op for B+W pics or if you wanna play with bokeh).

Probably get some hatch chili mex food in ABQ for a stop.

West Texas sucks? On the OB?

Fort Stockton is home for me and now living in Houston I make the drive to Phoenix a few times a year. I eat lunch in Fort Stockton then drive to the west side of El Paso to spend the night. From there it's not much over 400 miles to Phoenix. Sedona is about 2 hours from Phx.

There's an old, restored hotel in Van Horn - El Capitan - that has a nice bar and restaurant.

To drive - the scenery. It is boring. That is what I meant.

I disagree but to each his own. Once I pass Ozona I love it.

The worst part of driving from Houston to anywhere is getting out of Houston.

Depends. Sometimes, a knowledge of the history, geology, or agriculture makes it interesting.

I'd rather drive through 1000 miles of desert scenery, than 100 miles of green tunnels of trees where you literally can't see the forest for the trees.

Tucson to Boerne is a piece of cake.

Having grown up at Fort Stockton and my parents having lived in Balmorhea and Van Horn before moving to FS I probably look at that drive differently than others.

I probably used to like the scenery more until I moved to trees and mountains.

Northern route, Albuquerque westward:
Not much to say about I-40 from Albuq. to the AZ border. Anything worthy of seeing is well off the highway. There is a casino west of Albuq., but I haven't been in it other than to eat lunch at the crummy Dairy Queen there. I can recommend eating at the Fire Rock casino on the eastern side of Gallup. It is pretty much now the only place we eat in Gallup. Never had a good meal anywhere else. Downtown Gallup isn't much to see either, unless you are looking for Native American artwork. They have that in spades. On the main road that sits between downtown and the interstate is the historic El Rancho Hotel. Worth a few minutes to wander through if you happen to be in the area getting gas or fast food.

In AZ, a great place to see is Petrified Forest National Park, the northern entrance of which sits right on I-40. Even if you only have a few extra hours, it is still worth it to drive through. Enter at the I-40 entrance, then drive to the south exit. Stop where you can, definitely recommend the Blue Mesa area. The facilities at the south entrance are a bit better than the ones at the I-40 entrance. Once you exit the south gate, go right back up to Holbrook and the highway.

If you decide to stay on I-40, don't stop at the Hopi Travel Plaza east of Holbrook if you don't have to. That place is a dump. The Navajo travel stop a bit further east on the south side of the interstate isn't much better either.

A great place to eat in Holbrook (the only great place) is Bienvenidos Family Restaurant on the main drag north of the highway. I think it is next to a Quality Inn. Sounds like a Mexican food place, but they have all kinds of food. Not a fancy place, but it is clean, and the food and service is great. It is the only place we will eat when in Holbrook.

Further west is Winslow. The downtown area has some restaurants, most of which are not that great. However, the one at the historical train station and hotel called the Turquoise Room is wonderful. Great food and service, in a historical setting. If you stop, explore the entire train station/hotel. It is a great place to stop for a short time and get a meal and stretch your legs.

Meteor Crater is between Winslow and Flagstaff. Not much anything else to see along this otherwise boring stretch of highway.

Flagstaff is big enough to have all the chain restaurants and hotels just off the highway. The downtown area is small so easily manageable, but still has some very interesting stores. Great place to explore if you have the time.

The road between Flag and Sedona goes through a winding and deep canyon. Extremely beautiful, but really fills up with traffic on weekends and holidays. I have read that it can sometimes take over two hours to make the 30 mile trip.

In Sedona, try to catch a sunset up at the airport. The airport and surrounding hotel/restaurants sit up on a mesa that overlooks the entire area. Can be crowded on the weekends. Actually, the entire area can be hugely crowded on the weekends and holidays. Plan accordingly.

I'll cover southern route later.

Split the difference.
I-10 to I-25, turn west at Socorro on US 60. US60 to St Johns and then north to I-40. Very scenic once past Magdalena, but of course not as fast.

Allows you to get a green chile cheeseburger in San Antonio, NM, and you can see the Very Large Array from the highway. Really sucks that they have yet to reopen it for tours. It is a fascinating place.

If you like wine, outside of Sedona go to Page Springs Winery or over to Cottonwood. Another fun town is Jerome. Haunted mining town with 5 or 6 wineries including Maynard's the lead singer of Tool. Eat at The Asylum up on the hill.
