Have an opportunity to buy a very lightly used XL BGE in a teakwood nesting table. However I know if you crack the ceramic you're done. What's the best way to move this? I have a truck but any tips?
Pull all the innards out of it and wrap them in bubble wrap. I don't think you need to remove the lid. Just strap it in tight and drive carefully. How far are you moving it?
Maybe 10 miles. Not super far. But it's only been used 10 times or so and the guy is selling it for $700 total for the XL BGE, teakwood table, cover, and some accessories.
That's a great deal. Take the fire box and ring out of the inside. Place each in its own trash bag on the floorboard of your vehicle. As another poster said, strap the lid down and you'll be ok. You can place the base on a piece of cardboard or plywood to make it easier to slide around.
Said the person who moved it twice in California, then to a storage location and house in Connecticut, finally to a storage location and then a house in Virginia. BGE is 14 years old and going strong.
I built a platform out of plywood I bolted to the base of a dolly. Ratchet strapped the lid to the base and then ratchet strapped the whole thing to the dolly. Everything becomes one unit at that point.
I have 6 foot ramps I'd have someone help me pull it up into the bed of my truck. Ratchet strap to the sides.
Have someone help me roll it off.
If you don't have a dolly and have a couple beefy fellas you can lift it in the bed. Then just strap it in.
You can also take it apart like others have mentioned. It's very portable at that point.
They're more durable than you think. The key is not letting it slip and gain momentum vertical or horizontal. Something is gonna give at that point. Either the vehicle or the Egg.
I moved a round Primo (comparable to a Large BGE) a few months ago. I removed the inner ceramic fire ring and box and placed it in a pickup bed with a carpet liner and strapped it down. If I was moving an XL sized BGE, I would go the additional step and remove the lid.
Well picked it up today. Took out fire box and grates, and was able to lift it in the table whole into my truck without taking anything else apart. Was a challenge but me and a friend and the seller got it done. Ratchet strapped it into the truck bed and put all the inside stuff inside the truck. Didn't take the highway so was probably 15-20 mile drive, then was able to get it out of the truck with just my buddy and me. All good to go. Can't wait to fire it up soon! Appreciate the advice. Still feel like I got an absolute steal for $700. Seriously barely any soot or color on the inside. Doubt the guy even used it 10 times.
