What do you use for protein feeder? I've seen several options out there but want to get some feedback on what's good/bad in your experience. Thanks.

Edited to protein feeder from corn feeder. I'll just buy cages for the corn feeder. Not sure how to protect the protein.

I have heard of people coating the legs of the feeder with a mix of crisco and cayenne pepper. Supposedly they get it on their paws and lick it off and then decide that feeder is no bueno. No idea how well it actually works.

It is a bigger version of a squirrel proof bird feeder. Don't know if it actually works. Texas company I believe

Nothing is going to effectively work at eliminating raccoons from getting their fair share of protein from a free choice protein feeder.

You can go with a timed protein feeder to reduce some of the losses but I've seen them eventually learn those times and adjust their schedules accordingly. Additionally, you end up hurting the main targets of the protein feed by reducing the available quantity they can eat in a given sitting. The purpose of the protein is to feed them as much as they want to eat in a sitting.

I am also strongly opposed to timed protein feeders because once they clog, and they will clog due to moisutre/chunk of feed in the bag/etc., they're an absolute nightmare to clean out...

I attach a dog proof coon trap to every leg of my feeder. Catch some every week for a few months and then go 4-6 months with no action. It has helped reduce the over all numbers.

Same here.

Toss out some traps on occasion to thin the herd, sometimes when I'm at the lease I'll sit back about 60 yards and drink some whiskey with a .22 when I know they'll be likely to come waltzing in for dinner.

Its just part of the game, you are going to feed coons, birds, pigs, etc. in addition to deer. Hell, i took a chance the other day and set a protein feeder up without a fence hoping it would make it 4 days so I could get back out there to put a pen around it. It made it less than 18 hours before the cows found it, drained half of it and knocked it over. It is what it is.

I hang 4" PVC pipe with bailing wire from top and about 6" off the ground. This works for spin feeders but if spout is good height for deer, the coons stand under it and chow.

When I go to the website it just shows that they're relocating facilities and nothing else is available. Can't look around the website or anything.

It's been a year since I've done business with him

I just went to website on my phone using Google Chrome

"Coonhood is currently in the process of relocating facilities. As such, many Coonhood models are unavailable until production can resume. We anticipate the relocation will be complete by Monday, 5/9/2022, and production will resume. Please call or email with any questions or to place an order understanding the delivery time will be delayed. Thank you for your understanding!"

Try contacting him with your feeder make and what you need. Haden will get back with you

Last part made me laugh.

I don't know anything about feeders myself but a good friend will fill his with an understanding that he is also paying the "coon tax". Like you say, it appears to be a case of it is what it is.

I went out and bought a 17HMR and use it at night when I see a spot they are hitting. I was already night hunting for hogs but just expanded what I shoot now. I just got my rimfire can out of jail so it will be even more interesting to see how the coons react when their buddy falls out of formation. I was told the coons will come back even stronger after shooting them like I have been for over a year now but I haven't seen that at all. I will say that they get sketchy around the feeders now and don't hang out like they used to which I find hilarious to watch.

If you are using a computer and not your phone, you can click anywhere on the page and then the home page appears and you can navigate to the "about" page. Probably just have to call them or send an email. Located in San Angelo.

I have no affiliation with the company and have not purchased these. Just thought it was an interesting option I came across last year when I was looking for a place to buy a new feeder in that area.

I bought a new deer feeder (American Hunter) about 6 months ago. It had an varmint zapper attachment you could buy. In the past I installed a stiff wire cage around the feeder mechanism. It seemed to do a good job. My neighbor zip tied carpet tack strips to the legs on his feeder.

I love the idea of the Coon Hood....but not the cost. I can buy a whole lot of protein for the near $1500 dollars or whatever it would cost me to buy the hoods.

I know some old guys that used to mix golden malrin and coke.
the bragged about killing tons of coons, but also said don't tell anyone.... it's illegal.

so that method would effectively keep coons out of your protein, but might land you in a bind.

If a deer can get it, coons will to. Don't buy into these snake oil pitches for anything labeled "coonproof". Height is no object to the crafty coon. Especially the ones who ride hog steeds into battle.

That is nuts. Anything that eats the dead coons will die too? So I can solve the coyote issue too?

Be careful you don't get caught poisoning raptors, even accidentally.

Try mixing quickcrete with cornmeal. It works on rodents and is non-toxic to anything that might eat their bodies. Though I've never tried it on something as big as a raccoon.

Put about five of the snare traps where a "hand" has to be inserted to trigger it. Bait with half an Oreo cookie.

You will thin the population in no time. As a plus, deer don't seem to concerned with a coon losing his **** stuck in a trap a few yards away from the protein.

Just pay an Arkansas baseball fan to sit near the feeder. They will handle any racoons that come around.

Depends how strong it is. But anything that eats the poison is gone. Birds, squirrels, possums. Coons won't make it 5 feet most of the time. Heard of someone that put it on the little platform of feeder, there were 2 coons that didn't even make it off the platform
