If you're looking for a tweener rifle build that isn't a 6.5 or 300, and want some factory support (what the 7SAUM never got)…it appears Hornady is going to play footsy with GW and use their 7 LRM to create the 7 PRC.

Possibly out this fall.

Maybe next SHOT

But if it'll do a 162 ELDM at 3k from a 22" tube and good brass life…YUP sign me up.

I have a 7 PRC that Horizon Firearms built for me and love it! I typically build everything with a 20" barrel so it's still comfortable hunting with a can. I'm shooting 175 eldx at 2850fps it's a damn salty round. Frustrating that I can't find brass right now but I hope to have enough to get me by

Are you just resizing 6.5 cases?

All indications point towards Hornady necking down the 300 PRC.

Magnum bolt face long action.

Necking up the 6.5 would just plot velocity right in line with the 7 SAUM/WSM. Coming off the 300 PRC will put this between the 7 SAUM and the 28 Nos.

Basically a modern case designed 7 Wby that will be mass supported for properly twisted tubes to shoot heavy BC bullets at non barrel burning velocities.

I have a 7LRM i bought off a guy. Awesome round but hornady brass sucks. Hope the PRC has more oprions.

That's what I've been told about that brass.

I'm not holding my breath, as the 6.5 PRC has been around for a few years, and brass availability still sucks. Even with Lapua on the market.

So yeah. 7PRC be ready about 2028. Ha

Can they just focus on making more ammo right now

I'm surprised this has taken so long.
I was once interested in the 7LRM after visiting with a friend that has one. The scarcity of ammo and reload components were major detractors. Nothing worse than having a rifle and scraping by on limited ammo stores.

I stuck with my 7STW. I have enough factory and reload components to outlast the barrel.

I haven't entertained any of the Sherman stuff. Too proprietary. Gotta get your gunsmith to rent the reamer (extra $), buy brass and dies from Sherman (extra $), etc.

The fast 7 is a crowded space. The SS has lots of competition. And if/when Hornady throws their weight behind the 7PRC, I don't think it makes much sense to tote around a specialized .284 unless you're flush with components and will always reload for it.

Not saying the 7PRC will be the go to big 7, as the Remington Magnum has quite the nice head start. And nosler did a lot with the 28.

But Hornady has shown the ability to get the entire industry behind:

1) efficient case design
2) proper twists for long high BC pills
3) high end factory ammo for non loaders
4) great bullets to compliment

Random, but anyone ever shot a 7 BR? I just saw factory brass for it and had never heard of it.

I've got tons of 7mm projectiles that I'd like to shoot over time.

No. More efficient case design. Likely meaning less powder to reach velocity, and all without bullet seating depth intruding upon powder space in the case.

If they are using the 300 PRC case to neck down, the 7 PRC will likely out race the SAUM and WSM, but not the 28 N. It's a hot rod, and the somewhat well documented difficulties in finding accuracy nodes in hot rounds is out there for consumption.

Lots left to be learned, but it should be a nice addition to the .284 space. Especially if Hornady brings out all the stops. Brass, bullets, etc.

Bump because it's here.

https://backfire.tv/7mm-prc/

Cartridge was approved by SAAMI on June 7 and released June 16. Backfire did a good write up and video review of the details and comparison to other cartridges.

180 grain ELDM at 2,950 out of long action.

This really rounds out the PRC lineup.

Interesting. I am looking to build a 6.8 Western soon as an alternative to the 300winmag.

They made it a long action round which means it will compete with the other .284 cartridges in the long action. To me they missed the goal with it by making it LA instead of SA. A commercially supported .284 in a SA would have hit the mark perfectly.

I guess they just couldn't get enough performance difference over the 6.5prc if the dropped the 7prc to a short action. I've seen a lot of the 7 SAUM and 7 WSM guys switching to the 6.5prc. May be due to availability and price, but I don't think they're losing much performance.

I think the 6.5, 7, and 300 PRC is a solid lineup that has something for everyone. They've taken each caliber and fully optimized with nothing left on the table. The 7 PRC will be the most prominent Western hunting cartridge on the market within a few years.

For the 6.8 Western, it sounds like Winchester/Browning really screwed themselves as Nosler and Hornady have stated they won't touch it. Winchester and Browning are the only brands that are making this and it will probably stay that way for a long time.

I just wish someone would start making 7saum ammo again...
