I'm looking for an app or website where I can take a satellite pic from google maps (or similar) and outline an area, and have it give me the estimated acreage for that area.

Ideally it's something free and SIMPLE to use.

Any suggestions?

Google earth has a function that can calculate areas.

Is it a really quirky outline or does it have a few fairly straight boundaries? You could just use the measuring tool in google earth and calculate the area based on the lengths of the boundaries, but if its goofy shaped that's not really gonna work...

edit: looks like it has a point-and-click area measuring tool now so should be easy peasy

If you're not having any luck finding the 'measure tool' on Google, just post the coordinates and I'll do it for you.

Use Google Maps. Trace the boundaries with the measuring tool and reconnect to the original point. It will give you an area. Convert to acres.

I use onX currently.

But while at A&M I took a class on interpretation of aerial photography and worked with the Google maps tool. Yea that was a real class. It was pretty awesome.

Click on the ruler in GoogleEarth and select the polygon tab. Super easy

The desktop version (as referenced above) is much better to measure areas. The online earth.google.com can do it by closing the shape but I like that you can save the areas in the desktop version.

GoHunt isn't free, but it sure does make doing something like this easy.

OnX can do it easy. If it's a fully deeded area it will tell you just by clicking on it

This was the foundational course for my degree plan. The higher you got into Popescu's courses the better they were.

How could you not like a guy whose website starts off with lasers.tamu.edu?

I've used findlotsize.com in the past. Not great, but may help for what you are needing.

Also, most Central Appraisal District sites have good (high-res/recent) aerials, deed underlays with data, and a measurement tool.

OnX hunting app has a lot of the parcel information including the ownership and recorded size. If all else fails they also have multiple ways to measure distances or acreage.

This.

If you get an area in ft^2, divide by 43560
If you get an area in mi^2, multiply by 640

When I was in Zambia I used google maps but approached it differently. I needed to know the acreage of the farm ar Chasefu so I used a gps app on my phone and walked the perimeter, getting gps coordinates along the way. Later at home i plotted the coordinates on a google satellite image and it gave me the area in hectares and acres.

Phones and handheld GPS (GNSS) units are great with proper procedure and decent or better field conditions. It's useful to know that lacking either can quickly degrade their performance from a few feet to tens of meters. Not always that much, but you rarely see anyone use such a device in a manner such that they'd be able to document it's performance against any kind of standard.

If you're trying to get good field positions keep the device out of your pocket and elevated. Trees or buildings will quickly degrade positional performance. Some devices may need to remain screen unlocked for the best performance.

Depends on your use case, location, equipment, and procedure but decent aerials are typically just as good or better than poorly field verified with a cheap GPS.

We use MapRight and I believe they have a free version. Very robust mapping tool with tons of overlays

I have an app called Fields Area Measure. You can either walk the perimeter or put in points on a map.
