Is a battery impact wrench even worth considering?

Looks like you can get around 450 ft-lb in a 20 V wrench. That should be plenty for generic homeowner/shop use, yes?

Way more handy than a pneumatic. Check out the torque test channel on Youtube to see various reviews and "actual" power levels. I love my Milwaukee high torque

For sure. Especially Milwaukee. I have a 3/8's drive that can break some stuff but not all (can't break lugs) I still love it though and it always stays in my truck. My 1/2 inch hasn't found anything it can't break though. Check out the m18 fuel line if you're looking for a 1/2 inch

I've used a 1/2" Makita cordless for several years now. It's plenty for anything I've done, including many severely corroded auto/golf cart bolts. Pretty rare to need more, for my use. I've had lug nuts that were cross-threaded it wouldn't break loose, but not much else. It'll break off rusty bolt heads before quitting, usually.

That said, I'd probably get the high-torque one (740ft-lbs, fastening) now - wasn't made back then. Price isn't that different

Of all of my battery powered tools - that is the one I would buy again in a heartbeat if mine went kaput.

I use the hell out of it, way more than I ever thought I would, and love it every time I use it.

This one has worked well for me. They give $60 off during sales:

I bought a Makita brushless since I'm in their ecosystem and have no complaints. Haven't used it for anything real bad, but I use it to rotate tires on 3 vehicles and have used it to remove some old rusted lags that my normal impact wouldn't budge.

Yes. Definite yes. I use mine all the time. Mine will break lugs and twist off lug bolts (ask me how I know). Haven't found anything it won't handle.

I think it's a must have for the DIY'er. I use mine all the time. I have a RIDGID 18v. It would do the job but once I got an Octane battery for it, It does everything I need to. If I had to do it all over again I'd go Milwaukee in a heart beat.

Yes. Love my Milwaukee 1/2"...I have an older corded impact, but battery is way handier and worth it

Have the Milwaukee M18 1/2". It is awesome, and especially convenient to throw in the truck when towing a trailer

Yes absolutely. I don't hook up a trailer to my truck without it coming along. That includes equipment hauling or recreational trailers. I have a Milwaukee 1/2"

I keep a 1/2" dewalt impact on each side of my tool bed so I never have to walk around the truck to fetch one.

Hell yes they're handy as all get out.

When we put Soucy tracks on combines last summer the guy tightened them up with a Milwaukee 1" impact that I'd never seen before. When we went to torque them they were mostly right at the 450 ft lbs we final torqued them to.

Me too. Also included is the right 6 pt deep socket for truck or trailer and a good floor jack.

Yes.

My 1/2" 20v Dewalt has been worth every penny. Plenty of torque (I have their big one) and battery(4ah) lasts all day.

It's heavy, but imo that makes it easier to use; it doesn't try to torque my hand off.

I'd definitely replace it if lost or stolen.

Edit: I use it for truck suspension work, so idk what your plans for it are.

Milwaukee m18 3/8 drive is good and small

1/2 drive will blow up pretty much anything on a race car or trailer

3/4 drive will blow up pretty much anything on a tractor or 18 wheeler.

Same. One time with inadequate tools alongside the road waiting for someone was all it took to remember all of it.

If you are already into Ryobi's you can get some savings with 2 x 4Ahr HP batteries and a 600ft-lb 1/2" tool.

3/8 makita 20v here.

Stays on charger under backseat of f350 and I can rotate my tires if need be.

EDIT: total brain fart. I have the Dewalt 20v.

I have a craftsman - the last of the 18V line when it was still sold by Sears. It's indispensable and stays in my truck and goes along for every long distance trip we take in my wife's car. I have a set of torque sticks and a nifty combo socket set from HF that stays with it. Saved my bacon a couple of times just in the last year. Works dang good on driving lag bolts when building a blind tower too.

I got a 1/2 drive Milwaukee M12 fuel due to it being lighter and easier to handle in tight spaces. Got a round style battery in the grip and is more compact. Also uses the same style battery as the 3/8ths ratchet

Well this thread pushed me over the edge. I'd been thinking about it.

HD has a 1/2 Octane (Brushless) Rigid with a 4AH battery and charger for $149. Cheaper than the tool alone, and I could use another 4AH battery and charger.

I have the half inch milwakee m18 1/2" impact. Don't use it as often as someof the other tools, but when I do I'm alway glad to have it around. It's much more powerful than I thought it would be.

To answer the actual question: yes, but really only if you have a battery tool system.

I would not go out and buy a dedicated battery powered impact wrench. They eat batteries under any real use (in my opinion) so use it in the field for maintenance for on the road for emergency repairs. In the shop, an air powered impact will be handier (once again in my opinion).

I had only ever had a DeWALT cordless drill until my dad bought me a Porter Cable 20V drill and impact driver set. I love 'em and only use the drill to drill holes. The impact driver is incredibly useful. I will say that I've never tried to remove lug nuts with it, but it does pretty much everything else I've ever asked of it.

Just to make sure you are talking about a true impact wrench instead of an impact driver. I have the Ridgid 1/2" impact wrench with the lithium octane battery. I think even if you don't have a battery system it is indispensable if you pull trailers or run road trips a lot. I use mine in the shop a little but also have a standard air wrench. But for on the road it is awesome. I carry mine all the time in the truck and it has been so handy a number of times, cutting my tire changing down to a couple of minutes of no issues compared to previous. Combined with an aluminum drive on wedge for tandem axle trailers, I've loved it for blowouts that needed changing out in the open road. It has even been really handy for stopping to assist drivers with flats-did it as the ice-maggedon was blowing in last week. Family struggling with a 5" long (j/k but it was short) lug wrench that came with the car. With my impact wrench I had the old tire off in seconds and the new one on just as fast, without getting dirty or down in the dirt and getting them out of the cold rain quick. Wouldn't go on a road trip trailer pull without it. Battery holds charge really well also.

Love mine. Use it regularly. Not sure how I got by without it for so long. I have a pnuematic for sale if anyone is interested.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

We got my FIL a 3/4 DeWalt impact.

That thing has some power. Probably overkill for some uses. It will loosen anything it touches for sure.

We had an old pipe brush guard on a Ford tractor. Was used for shredding etc. It has been on there for years and the guy who bought the tractor said no way you get those bolts loose. He is a mechanic and said if we get them loose, he is going to order one that night. Sure enough, it had no problem removing those bolts. Week later, the mechanic had him the exact impact we had used.

Short answer is yes - very handy to have when working remote or having to change a trailer tire.

I did not think I would use it as much (same with a cut off wheel).
