Got these pics from my game camera. Finally download the sd card and got a clearer image. One is from the gamecam app and one is from the same pic from my desktop, zoomed in. Same picture.

What do y'all think it is? Just a normal bobcat with great markings, or possibly an ocelot? I'm assuming not a lynx??

Doesn't look like ocelot to me. My vote is bobcat.

Doesn't have the chain spots and looks like pointy ears.

Ya, I see the white ear marking.

And from what the interweb tells me, ocelots have longer tails. This one looks short, like a bobcat.

Ocelots are only going to be in extreme south Texas in scrub habitat. They don't diverge from that habitat. Very secretive and not seen very often.

There was a Bengal housecat similar to the pic that wandered into the greenbelt behind my house a couple of years ago. Someone got a picture of it and holy sh*t did it cause a ruckus.
Spotted cat with a long tail, clearly not a bobcat... according to the local know it alls, at best it was an ocelot, many were afraid it was a jaguar or a leopard.

I have a Bengal cat. Looks just like the pic you posted. She disappeared for 3 weeks once and I knew someone had killed her. Dumb$#!% showed back up one day like nothing ever happened. Cats are weird

To this very good point - I would like to add a link to this particular MeatEater podcast episode that discusses with experts the kind of habitat that ocelot prefer and what is required to foster ocelot populations. I think a broader understanding of the amount of dense cover ocelot prefer would help sift a lot of misidentifications.

Thanks for sharing that podcast - very interesting. I especially like the discussion around the ESA and private landowners. I have a friend down here who owns a ranch in Starr County. He has jaguarandi on his land, has the game cam pics to prove it but those pics will never see the light of day because of the authority granted to the Feds via ESA.
