Deer Corn: "recent" price hike....

Have been using the local convenience store who keeps their pricing in line with feed stores by about 25 cents a 50lb bag for corn this year. Being our two purchases have been 8 or 9 bags each it was no biggie to pay the difference at $6.49/bag with the last purchase 3 weeks ago and the price two months ago was the same. Two minutes to the convenience store which was on the way to the lease. was worth the 25 cent price/bag. Today, I went to purchase the next round. Holy moooollly $9.99/bag. Called the closest feed store, which is known to be high for feed stores, but they stay open longer. ONLY a flat $9.00/bag. Will check with a couple others since I am running around town some tomorrow to see if it gets any better.

So, I know things have gone up aka inflation, but in three weeks has it really gone up THAT much? Every year at this time with the So. TX hunters rolling through and cleaning out the corn in town I expected some shortage as in the past, but am thinking the extra "bump" has to do with the So. TX hunters they expect to come through.

Anyone else seeing a 30% jump in the last few weeks?

New corn crop price has been over $5/bu all season. Sitting at $5.70 for May delivery in my area. Still holding out locking in the final quantity in storage as I feel we'll bump a little closer to $6/bu. Was generally well under $4/bu in 2020. Finally caught up to the deer corn supplies.

Your people were late to the game. Been that way for a while. If anything, it's down a little in the last few weeks.

A few weeks ago in Stephenville Tractor Supply had some fancy apple flavored stuff for $13+ and I choked at that, went to Bradberrys and got it for $10.50 I think, saw Allsups was $12.50.

I assumed it should be $5-6 a bag!

I think I've paid $8.50-9.00/bag since September from Mummes. Protein is a different story… that was creeping up to $15/bag by August. Scared to know what it is now.

Proteins were/are wild this year. Lots of money to be made and lots to be lost. Not for the feint of heart!

Yeah, this sums it up - you also want prime beef for $5/lb as well I'm sure.

What likely happened is that your convenience store was pricing off of what they had paid for their last pallets to be delivered. When it was time for them to re-order they realized they had to Jack their price up in order to maintain their profit margin.

So there's a second part to most commodity prices that farmers and ranchers get for their product called basis, in short it's kind of a measure of local supply/demand plus what it takes to transport it to the end user.

So while corn price per bushel on the Chicago Board of Trade is high, the basis for corn has been increasing during the fall as well. Here in central texas most guys are getting futures price around $5.90 (already at high levels considering the last few years) and are getting an additional $1.25 a bushel to deliver it somewhere. So clearing over $7 a bushel now for a net price. My guess is basis has increased in your area and that why the store price has gone up vs a few weeks ago.

Correct. What people are not factoring is bags are short industry wide and are costing a premium. And finding people to run the baggers are now at a premium wage. Finally shipping costs are through the roof.

I'm surprised they are not way higher.

Any market for used bags? I throw away about 200 a year.

No. Unless you are using for sand. Can't reuse bags because of possible contamination. A bag that had medicated feed or something with rumensin slipped in and used for horse feed can be catastrophic. Improperly handled used bags can also pick up different contaminations.

The feed store in Shiro east of College Station has a sign asking you to return their branded feed bags. I wondered if that was because of a shortage or just trying to reuse a product.

Depending on how stupid the "Brandon" administration gets, it could get a bunch worse, next year.

There are recent videos all over the internet of corn farmers in the Midwest saying they were paid by uncle Sam to cut down their crops, and to get ready for high prices and shortages.

As someone stated, contamination would prevent this.

But a small seed company might be looking at 100k bags easily. So recycling them would be very inefficient. Plus you need custom artwork, legal language, and product information.

I also want to see these videos. That's a bunch of b.s. to just throw out there without documentation.

Can't find the main one I remember but here's an article about the Biden administration trying to increase CRP acreage by 20%.

Big difference between cutting down an existing crop vs expanding CRP acreage

Yeah I've seen the video a couple of times and of course now I can't find it. A farmer was speaking into the camera in front of his field and gave his name and location and then talked for a bit about it.

This is why you shouldn't post things like this without having the video to go with it.

This is not a true statement at all.

At $6+ corn and $12+ beans, I can guarantee you no farmer was cutting down crops when they were getting prices they haven't seen in a decade.

Dude, the CRP has been around since 1985 - it's an old program. While I don't like Biden, there's no need to make up **** and play games with information.

As some one posted above, agricultural commodities have historical prices. There's no need to artificially prop up prices. Hell, several grains may soon not be found at any price due to shortages. Take a look at prices for proteins like cottonseed or soybean meal for the last two years and you'll see something not really seen before. I could go on with even by-products like corn gluten, wheat midds, etc.

As someone in essentially every aspect of agriculture for 50+ years, government agriculture programs are something that live their own lives and don't follow a typical R or D platform.

Paid $8.99 for corn and $13.50 for protein today in Junction. Have paid as much as $11.99 for corn earlier this fall. Ironically corn has been cheaper in Houston most of the year…..

First, I didn't make anything up. I definitely should have posted the video along with my original post (the video above wasn't it). And that way if it wasn't true, it could have been debunked.

Don't worry. None of the videos are true.

The gov't can't pay me enough to destroy my crops or to enroll more acres in CRP right now. I made a killing this year. Fertilizer and chemical prices are going to suck going into 2022 but I'll still make more than any real gov't program or TikTok joke.

As someone who works in the ag irrigation industry I can say with certainty that farmers are not cutting down crops for crp ground lots of shock videos went out as corn silage was being chopped and assumptions made. As others have mentioned commodity pricing is up almost across the board.

And spoiler alert, it won't be any different next year as input costs have gone up 2-3X in some cases. Roundup in a 275 gallon tote was $50/gallon just 2 weeks ago. Fuel has not started to trend down either and with inflation coming it will take even more dollars to buy other inputs.

I remember thinking that having basically all of the information that humankind had accumulated throughout history at our fingertips instantaneously would make us smarter.

Instead, we get flooded with misinformation. Bad actors with agendas now manipulate and disperse half truths and falsehoods that quickly spread. Sad state of affairs and very disappointing.
