Got to playing with contour data today at work and decided to check some road grades. I work off of 2222 in Austin, and for those that have driven that road, it has a very steep hill. But based on the contour data it's only 11% grade. What are some of the steepest public roads you've been on in Texas?

Probably Palo Duro Canyon is the steepest I've experienced. I did grow up in Amarillo and live in Houston now though…

I drug a 33' RV up that switchback with ice on the roads this past January. That's the most worried I've ever been behind the wheel.

My driveway is 13% and taking the trash to the street is a pain. I can't image 45%

My house in Steamboat has a steep grade. I'm not sure what it is but I dang sure feel it when I walk back up it.

Take a ride over the Rainbow bridge from Bridge City to Pt. Arthur. Built in the 30's, 177' tall. Your ears pop near the top. Feels like you go straight up and straight down.

Is it taking the trash to the street, or bringing the cans back?

I don't know what the grade of Birdcreek hill is in Temple, but it's pretty substantial.

Controlling a heavy bin on the way down is actually the harder part.

There are some steep-ass roads on St. John that cause some pucker.

SH 290 near Fort Lancaster is pretty steep.

12 miles west of Lajitas it is 15%. Lajitas to Presidio is probably the most scenic drive in TX.

Where do you live in Steamboat. I lived there back in the mid 70/ 80's. There are some steep drives for sure.

Good ole Suicide Hill. Had a busy that lived about a block away from it and when I started driving my 4 cylinder Wrangler in high school, I failed numerous times to make it up that hill.

Steamboat Blvd but not full time. Still in Texas most of the time.

Jester in Austin?

That hill on 2222 is a SOB to drag a boat up.

I'll agree 170 between Presidio and Study Butte has some very steep climbs. Just drove it a few days ago.

My son goes to school in Laguna Beach and there is one street in downtown Laguna that my 20 year plus land development eyes don't understand. Google Streets doesn't do it justice

San Francisco is known for some crazy stupid steep streets

We paved a section in a community in Keller that I had to get the Fire Department drive with their longest apparatus to make sure it could cover the grade.

Nevada 140 between Winnimucca, Nevada and Lakeview Oregon (truly the middle of nowhere) winds up the side of a mountain for a few hundred miles and shoots you out on what they call Dougherty rim. You make a sharp right turn to go right back down the side of the mountain with a straight drop off directly to your side. It's only like an 8-10% grade but it's the sketchiest stretch of road I've ever driven. Makes (modern) wolf creek pass seem like nothing.

Powder Mountain Road / Hwy 18 to get to Powder Mountain Utah has an average grade of 14% for 7 miles and its definitely well above that in some parts.

San Fran has some roads so steep that they have stairs to get up and down the sidewalks.

I've done River Road/Highway 170 several times on my Harley. It is an awesome ride and probably my favorite in Texas.

i've been on the big hill west of lajitas several times. Another one, which is also the highest paved public road in texas is the road up to Mt. Locke. I've done that one on a bicycle. Its about 11.5%.

Masada. It is/was, before the Romans built the ramp. No, I haven't been. Would be cool just to stand at the bottom and wonder how it would go if you had to charge that climb topped with angry folks.
Chipotlemonger
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Masada, that's it! It's quite the sight to see! I didn't get to see it from the bottom of the ramp, but you can get a great view from different angles around the fort and really get a sense for how steep it is.

Went to Israel back in 2017 and really enjoyed the visit to Masada.
