I think I've asked this before, but does anyone know of any leatherwork workshop that does classes in the Central Texas area? Preferably in the Temple/Waco area but would be willing to venture out a little further if there isn't anything in the area.

TIA

Tandy Leather offers some instruction on Saturdays if I recall. If you know what you want to learn search for books on Amazon, the library or places like Tandy. I bought a basic beginner book from Tandy and started that way. Also, there are lots of YouTube videos out there, but I will caution you that there are many ways to do things and trying to
Learn directly from YouTube may be more confusing than helpful when getting started.

I agree with all said. One of the problems with this craft is there is a learning curve, and leather and leather tools, products, etc, can be a bit steep. I took leatherworking in 8th grade in 1966. I learned some basic skills and went on the buy books and get books from the library. There are definately multiple ways to do most things. I still have the tools I bought in the early 80's, and they all work fine, but if I would start from scratch today, the initial investment would probably turn me away.

Having said all that, have enjoyed making guitar straps, belts, a briefcase, buckles, Bible covers, and other stuff.
Making my own carving designs has giving me lots of pleasure and been a release for my creative juices.

So, if you are realistically willing to put in an initial investment, and willing to take the time to learn the craft, go for it!

Youtube can be your friend, but as stated, there are so many ways to do something that it can get a bit frustrating.

Maker's Leather Supply has classes in house. He has several build videos on YouTube as well. They're located in Elm Mott I believe.

I've been trying to dabble in leather work. I've found that Weaver and Springfield leather usually put out quality content. If you're into carving, Don Gonzales is top notch. And find someone who makes videos of whatever projects interest you and see the steps. For me it was firefighter related gear so I found a guys who's style I like and learned as much as I could.

Contacted them about a month ago and they said they didn't have anything scheduled for the foreseeable future but that as soon as it slowed down they would get some scheduled...

My hope is it's because of the need for them to be able to turn out product for Christmas orders and not that they just aren't doing them anymore.
