How long do you want to ignore this user?
Howdy -

Our 7 y/o lab had TPLO surgery this morning on a hind leg. The post surgical instructions are pretty clear, just looking for any tips that might make the 8-10 week period easier on all parties.

Thanks in advance!

No real tips but our dog handled it amazingly well. Seemed to know instinctively to stay calm and take it easy. I anticipated his recovery being really awful and it wasn't. Good luck!

At that age, hopefully won't have to deal with a lot of hypherness. Might help to put a sign up telling people not to knock or ring the doorbell.

My Chessie will have stitches remove on Friday, so I am a bit in front of you. He is a big dog, also laid back.

I used a nylon tow strap to lift his hindquarters to take outside.

Be careful on tile or wood floors.

My pup is not crate trained, so keeping in small area when not supervised.

Pup started wanting to move around on his on about 1 1/2 week after surgery.

Commit on "do not knock" note on door is spot on.

Swelling in hock was concern but dr was right that is would probably decrease at end of week 1

Dr Boogs loaded me up on doggy Valium which was quite effective. I kept my boy downstairs. I was very careful to have him leashed outside. I did PT exactly like they suggested.

Don't take the cone off early. I removed it after 2 weeks and it took my lab about 24 hours to ruin everything. After we got it back under control I left it on for a month. The giant cone made life miserable for him eating, drinking and entering and exiting the largest crate you can buy.

Two years later the other leg gets sore sometimes when he runs too hard. He limps for a while but seems to recover. The A&M surgeon told me to give him Cosequin and I think she was right.

On a positive note though he trusts me and loves me more than he did before the surgery and recovery experience.

Also talk with your very about getting your dog on Carprofen for pain. We keep it on hand all the time for our Weim who has had both knees done. Anytime we go on a long walk or she's trying around outside we give it to her.

Surgeon that did her surgery said he gives it to his older dog daily.
