Anyone into magnet fishing?
My sons brought it up to me as a fun activity for summer. Any experience or tips? Is this the worst idea ever?

It is basically a strong magnet at the end of a rope. You throw it out and hope to catch something metal.

Seems like fun but might want to warn your kids that a lot of what they see on youtube is staged.

Go to a certain spot of Buffalo Bayou and you are likely to pull up old Civil War muskets and maybe even some,fused cannonballs that were thrown in so tge yankees would not be able to get them at the end of the war.

I can't believe how popular the YouTube videos are... seems like the ADD generation's version of fishing.

We live in Kentucky, which has been settled for a relatively long time. Maybe we will find some cool old stuff, but I am betting on fishing gear, trash, or nothing.

This, it's great fun for the kids. Go to local retention/fishing ponds and you'll probably get something. I've gotten pliers, knives, a zebco reel, shopping cart. Pro tips: set up a cone of some sort to slide down the rope above your magnet to keep it from getting snagged. I use the top of a big shampoo bottle. Also wrap the whole mess in a priority/express (tyvek) mailer so you don't get your magnet covered with little rusty debris
