My granddad (died April 2000) has some utility deposits and old savings accounts that were overlooked totaling about $350. I'll let my dad know tonight.

I think I got back $22 a couple years ago. Then I started looking for some other family members. Found $200 for my BIL. Found $3000 for an aunt and uncle from some medical insurance thing. Wish I would have gotten a bigger pay day for myself, but was happy to help out some family.

Over the last few years, I've found several hundred bucks for family and friends. Nothing for myself of course, but worth looking into.

I send the link to my dad every year and the stubborn old man never does anything about it. There's over $1,100 sitting out there for him all in easy to claim methods.

In his aggressive old age he's less and less trusting of the internet.

Had an aunt and uncle pass with $10,000 checks (2) outstanding from an oil company. My cousin, their only child, drank himself to death soon after. His only daughter turned out pretty decent in spite of her upbringing. I've informed her. Will have to check and see if they are still outstanding

Edit: The same family has about $28,000 total still in the fund. The only survivor gets a crap ton of oil royalties, so maybe she doesn't care.

Looked up some buddies just for fun and saw one had not disclosed. Anybody ever made a claim on one of those?

It's not too bad. I did it a few months ago to get ~$1,500 owed. Super worth the time spent (pretty much regardless of amount, basically free money)

Found some relatives with utility deposits from when they were A&M students in the late 1970s.

I've thought about putting together some official looking letter head and mailing people with large sums to let them know they have unclaimed property and I will access it for them for 25%. I think you have to put in your social which I think a lot of people would balk at but who knows.

Yes it's very easy. Takes 5 minutes and the check shows up a week later.

Before they put all the info on line, there were people who made a pretty good living doing just that. They'd go to Austin and dig out the records, then go after the biggest amounts. They'd tell you how much you were owed, but give out no other info.

If you agreed, you would sign an agreement giving them 10% (or whatever) and they'd work the claim for you.

Imagine how hard it would have been to claim a refund from Amarillo, pre-Internet, when all the records were in Austin.

Say a company sends you a check in the mail and it never gets cashed, or tries to refund a purchase or overpayment to a credit card that's no longer valid. Or even you were awarded a sum of money (class action, etc.) and the courts or other entity had no banking information or current address to get it to you. Typically they'll try to contact you once, but not much more.

They're not just going to let the company keep the funds since they're contractually yours. Every company is required to keep the funds for a required period of time based on the type of transaction (in case you come looking for it). Then after that waiting period they send it to the state so that the private company doesn't have to bear the bookkeeping and tracking burden (and doesn't have to manage an escrow account of these funds) and so the consumer doesn't bear the risk of that company going out of business.

Thanks for the reminder... I always check myself and have nothing in Texas. Always search my buddies and find them some cash here and there. I just thought about checking other states I have lived due to Army moves. Found some cash in 2 other states!!

It is a simple online form. You fill out more detailed forms buying junk online.
