I'm needing to replace a rotten pergola. Would like to use cedar so I'm not doing it again in 10 years. I have plenty of good sized eastern red cedars. With the price of lumber the idea popped in my head to have some of them cut.

Decent idea? Does it have to be kiln dried? I can cut and load myself. What's a reasonable cost to have it milled? If I need 6x6 beams, how big does the log need to be? Any small sawmills around B/CS or east side of Austin?

Wilcox Timber in Rusk sells cedar - don't know if he will cut it but would be worth checking. Maybe a little further than you want to drive. We got all of our cedar for an Eagle
Scout project for picnic tables at Lake Naconiche and they turned out perfect. Beautiful wood

I think its a good idea, not sure on needing to be kiln dried or not, but my dad had a bunch of cedar cut up at his property outside of Caldwell and used Matcek Sawmill from Franklin and was very pleased with their service. We've built several things out of the cedar already (just finished up a coffee table for our patio last week actually)

Give them a shout as I cant remember what the price was, but they're good guys.

It looks like someone has started one in Navasota on Business 6, right across from Carroll's Giant Burger. May be worth a trip down to see if they'll work with you.

There is also a small mill in Hempstead. Just past the fairgrounds

I use Tommy Glover for cedar, he's got a mill out in franklin/wheelock area. - Last I used him, he was $100/hour, doesn't have a kiln. Cedar and Saw House

I've used the old guy in hempstead and not satisfied, crappy cuts and no communication. I wish I would've taken a pic of all the logs I dropped off, that's on me. Once I got home, I realized that the nicest one was not returned, he claimed there was wood that was "his" in the kiln, when mine was the only wood in there, just can't prove it. He didn't have a heater in there and was relying on the texas heat, there were still plenty of live larvae in the mesquite. He charged $1/bf to cut and $1/bf to "dry".

There is also Tekton Timber in CS, nice mill and a vacuum kiln. Not sure what his prices are.
