Last week my neighbors house caught fire. My 6 year old daughter looked out the window and told my wife "mom, there's smoke over there", my wife was working and initially dismissed it thinking it was someone doing some spring cleaning burning grass clipping or something along those lines. She then asked my daughter what kind of smoke? My daughter replied, "thick black smoke mom". This kicked her into high gear, she jumped and looked out the window, yelled to me downstairs and I jumped out side and quickly realized this was a real thing. Grabbed my cell phone and ran over there in my house slippers (and mustard on my face as i had just bitten into a sandwich) while calling 911.

At this point the shed on the back of his house was fully engulfed. No stopping it now, neighbors truck was gone so I was fairly confident he wasn't home but I still knocked on his door like hell. Also he has a labrador he'll keep in the garage while he's gone. I knocked there too to see if I could hear a bark or anything dog sounding. As we waited for the 12 minutes for the Fire Department to arrive the shed fire jumped from the shed, to his boat structure/boat, and to his house. It was in his roof structure and top floor quickly. Super scary to just sit and watch it move like that and being so helpless in what you have the ability to do.

Good and bad, no one was hurt including the dog who was out running errands with the homeowner. However, the house was custom built from Yellow Cedar and with rising lumber costs and logistical issues it most likely won't be replace in kind. It's a good reminder to have a talk with your kids about what to do in case of a fire and to move some things out of the garage that you become complacent with.

As of right now there's still no known cause of the fire as he doesn't have electricity to his shed. He didn't have self igniting chemicals oils/rags but did have typical garden type things. Half the shed also stored cords of firewood so once it was lit, it burned hot...trust me.

Last little tidbit, my daughter was presented with a plastic fireperson hat and badge for seeing something and speaking up. We're super proud of her and so is the neighbor who has been really thankful. Because of her most all of his possession were salvaged.

Dog and owner just happened to be out & about together at the time, eh? Built of expensive lumber, you say? No electricity to the building but now known source.

Would've gotten away with it too if it weren't for your meddling kid!

I'd guess he had a battery go bad in some kind of electronic yard gizmo. Pretty scary whatever it was.

All joking aside, as a parent, this is terrifying. Stuff can be replaced.

That's just not true, if I were going to humble brag I would have slipped in a photo from my back porch taken just now, but as you can see that's not the type of person I am.

Edited to replace with a better photo as the sun came out

That's what I was wondering too. Anything that could get wet, mold, heat up, and then ignite like a grain bin fire.

Your hiring?!

Also, awesome your daughter was on point with warning. That is high key one of my greatest fears I spend way too much thinking about that I can't really rationalize. A house fire starting when I am gone from the house. Super glad the damage is just replaceable physical things. Scary stuff all around.

Lithium battery for power tools might also do it - but I suppose he's not likely to store those in a shed w.o. electric

Dumb Question: Do rechargeable batteries have potential to ignite if their charge is low or none?

Lithium reacts violently with water. If the seal fails in the battery, they will become exothermic

We had our restaurant kitchen burn down in 2013. It was due towels smoldering for approximately 24 hours after being taken out of the dryer. The combination of heat, static electricity, and cleaning chemicals caused it. I found a video of the pile of towels exploding onto the kitchen floor. That was after the fire investigator and engineer had concluded the same.

How freaking hot was the dryer?! I had not idea this was possible, let along 24 hours after they were OUT of the dryer!

Good on you for raising a great kid and being a good neighbor.

And am I the only one that sees some sort of hooded fire demon in your first photo?

Where do most people store their gasoline (for generators, mowers, and other tools and equipment)?
I have an attached garage and don't really have room in my back yard for a separate shed

It was a residential dryer. The bigger problem was the strong cleaning chemicals used in the restaurant. Even after they go through the wash residual remains. When combined with the heat and left in a pile in a milk crate for that long they smoldered in the middle. Then exploded out on the floor in flames right after management had left for the night. $650K in damage and four months of closure.

Towels had actually caught fire before and burned a hole in an exposed PEX water line that in turn put the fire out.

After the big fire we moved the dryer outside, where they caught on fire in the dryer.

Signed up for a linen service then.

Apparently this happens often.

Lord Amighty, that does not sound normal at all. I have to believe there was major misunderstanding or malfunction surrounding the flammable cleaning chemicals.

Yeah, I'm wondering what in Hades the are using in that restaurant to clean with. I thought it was well known not to wash/dry anything stained with flammable chemicals in a normal washer/dryer.

Standard restaurant cleaning chemicals, likely from ecolab or sysco. Yes it's more potent that the typical home stuff, but that's what was required by the health department. It's a common problem with painters rags as well. We sold out a few years ago and I was never the day to day manager, so I don't know too much about the specific chemicals.

Sheesh...maybe the health department should look into lowering the amount of flammable chemical required to meet code for laundering. After all, not real healthy to have businesses burn down with regularity, is it?

I think it might be more from grease residue. Not sure. I know we don't have dryers in the stores.
