My Chips are 21 years old. For years they were daily footwear. For about 10 years they doubled as my dress shoes (buffed up they have been to many funerals, weddings, interviews.....and dates). I have found them to be quite stylish with cargo shorts (my wife disagrees with this one). The leather around the top on the calf is starting to dry rot a bit, so I only wear them periodically now days. But I can attest they do work well for the intended purpose.

I had a cheap pair of La Crosse boots for when I lived in Okinawa and would have to hike down cliff side roads in order to spearfish. Had enough close run-ins with Habus, island pit viper, to warrant having them. Looked goofy as hell hiking in silkies with these tall boats and my spear fishing gear strapped to my back in seabag.

They were worth it for the piece of mind since I was way off the beaten trail.

Danner sharprails here. No break in. Really comfortable, but only had them for a year so I don't have a longevity rating yet.

Chips are great as long as you dont need traction. But if you are walking anywhere that can get wet/muddy go with Danners. And yes I know most rattlesnakes are not near wet/muddy, but water moccasins are, copperheads can be. As I can be in both kinds of environments, I now wear Danners.
I am not friends with people that want to tare down the Republic.

Cats work really well to keep the snakes away. My folks have lived on a lake most of my life. They've always kept a cat around and the water moccasins and copper heads keep their distance.

Feel free to play with rattlesnakes and see what it costs.

Not too many years ago, one woman I know got bit by a rattlesnake on Main Street near my office. The bill for her antivenom was about $5,000 per vial and it took, I think, 9 vials. Plus the ambulance ride, emergency room fees, and however long she spent in the hospital.

Today, antivenom is much more expensive.

And that is apparently from 2015. I don't know what my neighbor was billed for the antivenom.

By the way, part of his problem was that the nearest hospital no longer stocks antivenom because of the cost. They ended up sending him to Amarillo for treatment. It wasn't until he arrived at the hospital in Amarillo that they could start treatment.

It does sound lucrative.

The last time I handled a snake (a bullsnake), it bit me. That kind of dissuaded me from ever handling them again. It didn't make me anti-snake, just anti-handling snakes.

If I'm driving down the road and see a rattlesnake, I'll usually stop and chase him off the road so he doesn't get run over, but I'm not about to pick him up and carry him off the road.

So unless I could just put a glass in the cage and the rattlesnake would peacefully milk its own venom in to the glass, it isn't that lucrative.

I went to buy a pair and the website stated that they haven't released them yet. More like snake oil than actual snake socks.

It turns out that I misunderstood him. It was only $203,000.

I don't think that included the air evac, though. That ran close to $65,000 by itself.

A friend of ours just got hit (about an hour ago) on our land by a rattler. She is okay and miraculously only her jeans were wet (the lower part - by the calf, not the other place). We are guessing the jeans were loose enough and the venom just hit the cloth.

Ironically, I received my SNAKE GUARDZ today (ordered from Texas company https://snakeguardz.com - nice folks). We are ordering some for our kids but this only covers the lower legs. Would a plain set of cowboy boots be sufficient for our 5th grader daughters for their feet?

I've wondered about similar things myself. In particular, how do you know whether the bottom of the boot is sufficient to block a bite?

For kids, I don't think the boots I wore as a kid were all that strong.

By the way, my younger brother was working on a plow one day and felt something strike his leg. He looked down and it was a rattlesnake. His levis or bib overalls (not sure what he was wearing) were loose enough that the snake's attention was focused on the levis and so the strike didn't continue on to the leg.

Ever since my thyroid quit, I haven't found any boots that I can wear. My legs are somewhat swollen and the shaft on the boots that I've tried are all too tight.

I'm starting to think that a custom pair of boots may be in order. The obvious problem is that custom boots generally have a rather long lead time. There is a custom boot maker in Amarillo.

I've heard of companies having some boots with larger shafts, but I haven't found any stores that sell them yet.

Save your money. $40 at academy and you can wear with your regular boots. Easy to take on and off.

I've been wearing these several times a week for the last 3 months or so after the OB mentioned them in another thread. They're easy to take on and off, and (knock on wood) so far no snakes have put them to the test.

I was a little dense at first though regarding the elastic strap that is sewn onto them. My better half instructed me that it actually goes under the sole of the boot and rests against the front of the heel. I felt pretty dumb for not figuring that out on my own, but that's not the first time she's mentally bested me.

To the top of these from the ground measures about 16"-18". I'm hoping that snakes don't strike higher than that. Do they?

I use their gaiters. Lightweight. Not cheap, but light and flexible.

I think Russell moccasins uses this fabric as their snake proof fabric in their boots.

bump.....I need to get some new boots and curious if anyone has any experience with the lacrosse alpha agility, or another similar type of boot that is more rubber based vs a leather? The lacrosse one is appealing because its snake proof, and seems like it would be good for the random pig hunts, going through creek bottoms, etc. Curious how that style withstands stickers, cactus, etc. Basically I need something that can handle the random trips to south/west tx, but serve its majority of time around south/central TX.
