Does anyone here wear snake boots?

I'm curious about any recommended brands or features to look for.

A neighbor of mine got bit by a rattle snake late last summer. The total hospital bills for that snake bite ran approximately $240,000.

So I think that $300 or so for an effective pair of snake boots could be well worthwhile.

When I was a kid, we had peacocks which helped limit the number of rattlesnakes near the house. The closest I ever saw a rattlesnake to the house as a kid was about 300 feet. Without peacocks to keep them down, we've had rattlesnakes within inches of where we have to walk when walking up to or away from the front door of the house.

Any suggestions? Is there any problem with snake boots that aren't very protective from snake bites?

The only place I know of in Amarillo that carries them is Cavenders. Does anyone know of other stores that carry them?

Danner or Chippewa seem to be most common. I really only wear mine when walking in tall grass intentionally (upland bird, shed hunting, etc)

I have a pair of Chippewas that I like.

They are a little tough to get on if you have a high arch, but are comfortable to wear walking all day.

That's how we found a rattlesnake underneath a bush by the front door. My oldest brother noted a cat staring intently at the bush from a few feet away. He looked under the bush and found the rattlesnake within easy striking distance of anyone going in or out of the house.

I only wear mine a few days per year so I got the Academy brand. Wore them for 6-8 dove hunts last year and really liked them. They are HOT, but I think all of them are. If you are wearing them more often, I would buy the Chips and survive the break in. If you do that, you'll love em down the road. I just didn't need that level of toughness.

I wear regular leather work boots and snake chaps for all my field work. Tried snake boots for a while , but they were never as comfortable for walking.

I wonder if some snake proof pants and some boots that are reinforced at the bottom would be enough.

Years ago, my younger brother was wearing some loose fitting overalls or levis and felt something tap on his leg. He looked down to see a rattlesnake striking at his pants. With the loose pants, the fangs didn't reach far enough to puncture the skin.

The short answer is "yes". All of that works in "some" instances, but you are looking for something that covers ALL instances. Snake boots or chaps do that. Funny thing is, I've hunted all over Texas, guided in Haskell and Knox City, grew up hunting in East Texas, and I have never had a snake strike at me.

Talk about timing. You beat me by a minute.

Apparently there are also snake gaiters as well. That might be better so I could take them off easier when I go to town and don't need to wear them.

I've had bullsnakes strike at me. Only one actually bit me.

I've been uncomfortably close to rattlesnakes on a number of occasions, but haven't been bitten by one.

My next to the oldest brother did get bit by a rattlesnake when he was a kid when they were loading bales of hay on a trailer out in the field.

Occasionally Sierra Trading Post has Chippewas deeply discounted. Ordered them from Sierra for wife, kids and me a couple Christmases ago. Everyone likes them. I found break-in to be challenging but now can wear and walk in them all day.

I have been using the cheapest ones from Academy. I am on my third pair in the past 8 years or so. I like the side zip ones. I wear them almost every day in the late afternoon for a couple of hours. The first pair.... the zipper failed after about 3 years. The second pair.... the interior lining came loose to the point it was extremely difficult to put them on or take them off. So now I am on my third pair that is fairly new. I have always said that I am going to get the more expensive "nicer" brand but have not done that so far. I think the Academy ones, roughly $100.00 are just fine for occasional wear, but still plan to get myself a better brand.

I think it is interesting to watch Lone Star Law and observe what kind of snake boots those game wardens wear.

I love my Danner's. Probably the most comfortable shoe I own period. The second I get to the ranch they are put on and I don't even think about wearing anything else the rest of the time. Worth the money no doubt

Danner square toes. I haven't found a pair more comfortable. If you are around Houston Gordy & Son has them in stock you can try them on.

I have a pair of Danner Sharptail snake boots. They are my favorite boots I own. Very light and comfortable. I wear them at the ranch, even in the winter/not in snake country. They have pretty much become the only boot I wear.

Same here, except with Chippewas. The only downside is wearing them for is deer hunting. When I'm walking they tend to slap the back of my calves which makes some noise. Great for hunting through brush and cactus though and super comfortable.

Best advice is go to and try on a bunch of different pairs to find the ones that fit you best - they will all shed a bite

I got a pair of herter brand that fit me best - had to try multiple different brands to find the right one

LOL. In fairness 12f Mane would need about 50 cats for all the snakes on his property.

Oh, Chippewas are a must have for the deer hunter starter kit!

snake boots, check
performance camo, check
yeti everything, check
king ranch super duty towing a ranger, check.

Have to make sure you don't get snakebit at the Castell Store...

I have been using the Justin snake boots. You can usually find them for less than $200 and I have found them to be quite comfortable. I have not had my pair for too long so no clue on the durability.

I bought a pair of Irish Setter snake boots. They are lightweight and comfortable, easy on and off with the zipper. The only criticism is that they are not waterproof.

I did get a set of waterproof socks on amazon called "Randy Sun" sport socks which worked great. All in all, happy with the boot/sock combo. Wear them anytime I am out at the property.

I have Chips and Justin. Justin were half the cost and twice as comfortable. Chips are narrow and the calf zipper isnt real wide. The Justin are wider and softer footed

Have some Chippewas for hot and dry weather, and some Lacrosse front tie/side zip heavier ones for colder and wet weather.. And for those that think "colder" weather keeps 'em holed up, you got another thing coming. Seen 'em out sunning in the upper 40s and ready to "go".
