I'm the middle of remodeling the new place we bought and have seen rat and mouse droppings. So far snap traps haven't been successful for rats, but did get one field mouse. Cleaning up some trim I pulled out a while back and found a glue trap stuck to one board. Lo and behold, we have shrews in the house.

My cat brings one in a day into the house.

Shrews are predators. It eats the mice you are trying to catch, for example.

Pretty sure they eat insects, and a crap ton as they eat their body weight in a day. I've seen a mole but never a shrew in all my years. Very cool.

We caught some small cobra's when in Afghanistan on some sticky traps. Keeping food out of your hootch to keep rats and mice away suddenly took on a WHOLE new level of importance when you see that.

I keep those thin flat glue traps in the spare garage/workshop, by the corners of both overhead doors. They don't catch much this time of year, but over the course of the summer they will catch several hundred scorpions of all sizes. The big scorpions get pretty pissed when you poke them with a small stick and they can't do anything about it.

Yeah, that's the 9 year old in me coming out.

Mostly, yes, but they will also kill and eat mice, small snakes, and even small birds.
