How long do you want to ignore this user?

Looking at adding a generator and a transfer switch to my house for future hurricane/weather events.

Ideally I'd just go whole home generator that runs off of natural gas and propane, however, I am fortunate enough to live in a neighborhood with very stable power (I can count on 1or 2 fingers the number of times I've lost power for more than a few min. Even during Harvey I only lost power for 30 min to an hour or so once and so can't really justify the cost/benefit.

I'm looking at getting one maybe two 2200 Honda inverter generators to power my fridge/freezer/TV/modem/fans (and maybe a window unit). That way I can use the generators while camping.

Bottom line is I'd like to have at least a week of fuel on hand but gasoline isn't the most stable fuel source. How would y'all store enough fuel. Initially I'm thinking a 100 gallon tank and rotating stock by filling my truck when it gets close to expiring.

Any better suggestions?

TIA

I have two of these and 6 five gallon gas cans.

I just cycle through 5 gallon gas cans. I have enough engines that it never really seems to go bad.

How do you get that filled? I'm guessing you're not getting that in and out of the pickup bed too easily?

Transfer tank for your truck would be the easiest method. Fill up truck from tank and fill up tank at station to keep the tank gas fresh. You can toss in a few 5 gallon tanks to top off when you know some weather is coming.

I don't think those truck bed slip tanks are rated got gasoline. They're only diesel approved.

Was thinking about putting one of these on a set of skids for a fork lift so I can take it to at my dads shop but saw they weren't rated for gasoline. I'm sure it's more an issue with having 100 gallons of extra fuel in the event of an accident.

A diesel generator would be an option but I don't have much equipment near my house that burns diesel so it would be a little more difficult to rotate stock (plus Honda's don't run on diesel)

I may have tagged the diesel one but they have the gas versions as well. The six five gallon containers fill one tank per trip. I always keep one full.

Edit to add it weighs about 80lbs empty.

It's a combustible vs flammable thing. Caps also aren't rated for gasoline vapors.

Hutch mountain has a tri-fuel conversion kit for the Honda generators that appears to give more fuel source flexibility (and stability with storing propane). Haven't done much research on it but it looks intriguing.

This is smaller but might be easier to get in and out of truck

There are gasoline rated transfer tanks. I think they require a periodic inspection or testing.

OP if you're wanting to store fuel, I think this would be your better route

And TexAgs OB comes in with another solid recommendation. This looks like the best of both worlds.

Just ordered two of the EU2200i Honda's and the tri gas conversion. I think it's exactly what I was looking for.

I'm looking at the dual fuel ones, the smaller ones. You can keep propane around a lot easier and longer than gas.

I regret that I have but one diamond to give for this post. I am horrible with letting gasoline go bad... this is great! Thanks for the recommendation!!

I fill up 8 5gallon containers if a storm is coming.
If it passes, then I just start using them in my suvs. Gas never gets old. No net loss either, it's just inconvenient.

Curious what the run time of a standard 15lb propane tank vs 5 gal. of gas would be.

I'm curious about this as well. I might do a test with mine and an old window unit when they get in. Would be nice to know how much I need to keep on hand if my natural gas has supply issues.

I am too. From their website:

How long does my Honda Generator run on propane?

There are a few factors that change the runtime on propane. First, the length of run time depends on the size of the generator model and the size of the propane source. On a standard 20 lb. BBQ Tank a full load will run for approx.. 12 HRs, Half load for approx.. 22 hrs., and a quarter load for approx.. 33 hrs.

From Honda:

Quote:

Fuel Tank Capacity .95 gal

Run Time per Tankful 3.2hr @ rated load 8.1 hrs @ 1/4 load

Extrapolating, 5 gallons of gas would take you 42.6 hours at 1/4 load vs. 33 hours with a 20# tank.

How much gas does the fuel tanks in your car hold?

A transfer pump is $12. My truck and her large SUVs hold about 50 gallons before my fuel cans. I'd rather store it in the cars than loose gas cans.

Except you can't easily pump out in modern vehicles due to safety devices in event of a rollover

Mine holds 36 gallons. Haven't looked into siphoning but I'm sure in a pinch I could manage to get it out.

Will that conversion work with other units? I have a Yamaha 2000 I would think it would about the same. I have propane heat with a quick connect on the porch for my grill that would be super easy.
Aggietaco

Their website says no, but there may be other options out there. I mean, if I can convert an old Toyota 4runner to run on propane, I'm sure you can do it with a genset.
