I love and hate fly fishing in the winter, or virtually doing anything out in the cold for long periods, my feet become painfully cold fairly quickly. Just wondering what cold weather clothing/brands or tips you guys swear by.

Icebreaker merino wool base layer and Merino wool socks.

I spent half my life wearing cotton like a dumbass.

wool socks then bigger wool socks on top

base layer, followed by some really thick sweat pants, hunting pants on top, still have room for a bib if it really gets cold

on top, t shirt, wool base layer, hoody and hunting jacket

neck / head i'll usually wear a full face/head covering like a neck gator and then just cover my nose and wear an insulated beanie. throw my hoodie hood on top and hunting back hood on top of that if its raining.

wool cut off gloves because i like being able to feel my bow / trigger even if it is freezing. this set up has worked out well the past few years

This. Always thought merino wool was over blown. It's not. It is absolutely worth every penny.

Danner heavyweight merino socks are the best I've found. Filson merino waterfowler sweater is really nice. The newer breathable waders with the zip out liners are convenient and cut down on the number of lower layers.

Always wore cotton base layers until I discovered merino wool. It's awesome.

For mid layer on top I wear either grid fleece or a puffy jacket. For bottoms it's wool pants.

For outer layers...soft shell jacket or cabelas wooltimate or goretex rain coat. For extreme cold I'll wear bibs and parka outer layers

For footwear I've tried sorrel and lacrosse, but my Muck Wetlands win every time. I've worn them in single digit temperature tree stand sits for hours and they are completely water proof. The lugs on the soles help on ice as well. They are easy to slip on and off when wearing multiple layers

If it is cool, I'm usually in a lightly insulated Carhartt shirt-jacket or a Kuhl soft-shell jacket. If it is pretty cool, I will add a lightly insulated Arcteryx vest.

If it is cold, thin silk or polypro t-shirt, then cotton long-sleeve t-shirt, then Kuiu insulated shirt or a Patagonia Nano-puff jacket. Un-insulated Arcteryx or Filson shell if it is cold and raining.

If it's really cold, add a Patagonia down jacket. Un-insulated Arcteryx shell if really cold and raining and/or windy.

If it's really, really cold, switch an insulated Arcteryx Gore-tex shell for the un-insulated one, whether or not it's raining.

Layer, layer, layer. That's the trick to cold weather.

Base layer from somewhere like under armour (bottoms and top), blue jeans and long sleeve shirt next, then hoodie, last is heavy carhartt. Thin dress socks then thick wool socks for feet, and beanie or something that also covers ears for head. Warmest shoes/boots you've got obviously. Will keep you warm if you have to be outside over an hour in sub freezing temps and can take off layers if the day warms up later on.

One thing to be careful of when it comes to socks and shoes. Remember that while it's tempting to get as thick socks as you can and cinch your boots (if lace ups)/shoes as tight as you can, you don't want to cut circulation off to your feet and toes. That can be just as bad, it's a balance between warmth and getting a snug fit.

Been sporting the famous LL Bean "Main Hunting Shoe" with Darn Tough Wool Socks this week.
Merino long handles with Prana stretch Zion pants.
Long sleeve merino zip tee with puffy jacket. Kuiu DCS Guide vest over that.
Wool watch cap. Gore-Tex gloves. Wool neck gaiter. Polartec face mask.
Stomped around for an hour & 1/2 on Monday when temps were in the teens & was nice and toasty the whole time.

If I'm working on the farm:
Smartwool socks and carhartt

If I'm traveling in cold weather for work:
Smartwool socks and Outdoor research and a company vest.

Smartwool socks and Outdoor Research coats/jackets for me. OR has great gloves. They have glove liners that are warmer than a lot of heavy gloves I've had.

I'm no cold weather expert but I've been kicking around this weather (-5 all day yesterday) perfectly comfortable in the following:

Krazygoat mohair socks under muck boot chore xf's.
$20 base layers upper and lower
Sweat pants under baggy jeans
T shirt, hoodie, black Sam's club soft shell
Cheap wal mart beanie

Merino base layer from KUIU (brand doesn't really matter I just like the way their stuff fits) LL Bean Chamois shirts, puffy jacket or Carhart depending on what I'm doing outside. And double socks, one thin dress pair, and a pair of smart wool, then jeans and bean boots.

Browning or smartwool socks
Usually some sort of dryfit tights from UA or Nike (whatever was on clearance at Academy)
Wranglers
Simms Bibb
Cotton t-shirt
Flannel shirt or Canvas shirt (depending on how bad)
Simms Windstopper full sleeve fleece/vest depending on what conditions dictate
Simms Goretex Jacket over all of it, if we are cold and wet
Hands will be Drake fleece gloves when dry or barely wet.

Don't really have good gloves for cold and wet. They would need to be sensitive enough for me to fish in, and I try not to fish when it is cold and wet. I will fish when it is one or the other all day.

I shop military surplus items from Keep Shooting. I have a French Foreign Legion fleece coat that is extremely thick and that thing keeps my top warm. You also cannot go wrong with quality wool trousers. I wore them summer and winter outside as a police uniform and the money spent on them is well worth it.

If it's super cold or snowy, ski bib and jacket. Wool sucks are nice. Otherwise, layers and layers until I am warm enough.

I have a decent amount of Kuiu and Sitka, this week made me realize there is a difference between the two. Sitka is just flat out warmer.

My Bean boots with thinsulate and flannel lining keep my toes warm when I'm shoveling snow on my long ass driveway up here in Colorado. Also don't have to worry about walking through the slush once it starts to thaw out.
rather be fishing

Important thing to keep in mind for fly fishing in the cold is not restricting blood flow to your feet. If you're layering socks, you may need to considering sizing up on your boots/waders.
