Did you have to cut anything to add the natural gas conversion on this one?

What all do you run off this? Central AC?

Any idea on the THD on these duromax's. One place I found says less than 12%. But from your other posts, it sounds like you have a whole home surge plus surge on all sensitive equipment? Did that include washer/dryer and fridge?

Thanks for all the information you've shared so far.

Portable Westinghouse WGEN12000DF.
15000 Peak Watts, 12000 Running on Gas.
13500 Peak Watts, 10800 Running on Propane

Delayed delivery right now like many units.
Website lists THD <5%. If this is accurate, may be best bang for the buck for clean output and dual fuel.

Did you have to add a remote start set up? I don't see remote start listed as a feature on the DuroMax generators, and that's the brand I've really been looking at the hardest.

I have whole home surge protection and then each electronic device is plugged into a surge protectors (either the strip kind or or outlet with built-in surge protection).

I didn't add anything. I just went and looked and I think I'm wrong on the duromax. It must have been the Westinghouse I really wanted, but wasn't available when I purchased last year.

I would never use it anyway since you still have to go out and flip the transfer switch. Sorry about that.

Edited: the model listed by kcag965 has the remote start.

That's true. The remote start sounds really handy, but probably wouldn't miss it near as much as one would think.

I'm pretty sure I can run everything, but haven't tried the AC. We actually have some portable ACs we use instead so we don't worry about turning off other stuff so the AC can start. ACs we'll be the biggest draw and the thing to watch. They range so much in watt and amp draw you can't go by the generic load charts for AC numbers. Heat is no issue.

The NG kit I got was just a different snorkel you replaced the existing propane snorkel. It's bigger so you just bolt it on. No cutting.

No idea. I wanted the Westinghouse for the thd. I called last year and actually talked with someone who had a last name of Westinghouse. He said they didn't have the materials, line capacity, or labor to make them anytime soon and maybe not at all in 2020 because of Covid. So I bought the DuroMax instead.

This one looks intriguing...... with remote start.

Edit - NVM on this unit..... THD is only listed as <23% That's awful high. Great if we didn't want to run any electronics, but for running that stuff, this one sounds like a bad idea.

Imagine this...you know a storm is coming so you decide to get your generator set up and ready in whatever sound deadening box you've made. Lights go out in the middle of a downpour, so you flip the necessary breakers in the laundry room/garage, hit the remote start from a dry place, then flip the generator breaker on. You walk to the front of the house and see your neighbor across the street, Bill, out in the rain getting his generator hooked up and started. You ponder if you should go out and offer to help Bill, because he was man enough to tell you his daughter destroyed one of your sprinkler heads while backing out of their driveway. Then you remember he didn't offer to repair it, so you say "it's raining too hard right now" and go back to a happy wife.

Yeah, I'm becoming more and more sold on the Westinghouse Generators with remote start.

And if I'm reading/looking at this ST Switch thing they have correctly, you could just plug a couple of your basic necessities (like the fridge and deep freeze) into the ST switch while away on vacation and it would act like an automatic generator for those 2 items? Power goes off, generator kicks in and runs those until home power comes back?

I would love a tri-fuel that could run off of natural gas, propane, or gasoline. Seeing as most of the time you will have natural gas but sometimes you want to take it hunting or in a freak accident you won't have the natural gas at home. I know a lot more rural housing runs off of propane so it gives you a lot of options.

Does anyone know if you can hook up a dual-fuel generator to a NG line? I assume if it can be done for grills it might work for this application too?

You may be able to, have to check on if their is a carb available for natural gas.

They sell kits to convert to NG.

https://centuryfuelproducts.com/generators/conversion-kits/westinghouse

And if yours requires you to cut a piece out of the frame, they sell frame brackets as well you can buy if you don't want to grab one from HD and bend it yourself.

Natural gas and Propane carbs are identical, though I think the internal jetting might be different, as related to the heat content of each fuel.

A propane carb will have a vaporizer to lower the pressure from the tank, that NG does not need.

So here's where I'm at personally. The Westinghouse WGen 9500DF runs about $1,050 on Amazon at 12,000 peak and 9,500 running amps and dual fuel. But it has a THD of <23%.

The Westinghouse 12000DF with 15,000 peak and 12,000 running amps at $2,400 on Amazon and with the <5% THD.

The 9500DF is a far better price point..... can you put a whole home surge protector or just run your laptops/TVs etc on quality surge protectors to clean up the dirty THD? Or will it still be an issue anyway?

The Westinghouse with that included ST transfer switch sure seems like the best generators. Be really nice to go on vacation and hook up the fridge and freezer to that auto ST switch in case lose power while you're gone and at least have those items taken care of.

I'd do the better Westinghouse in a second. Are they actually available again?

Westinghouse told me they weren't producing them in 2020 when I tried to buy one, but couldn't find one in stock anywhere.

Westinghouse was supposed to release a tri fuel line of large portables to replace their dual fuels this year. I believe COVID-19 F'ed that plan. So you're current options are to buy the dual fuels and replace the propane snorkel with a bigger natural gas snorkel for about $120 (what I'm doing). Other than voiding a warranty, not much to it.

I don't need tri-fuel option myself. We are out in the county with no NG lines, so gas and propane are our better options anyway.

And no, I can't find the bigger one in stock anywhere. So it's probably going to be the smaller one if the surge protectors would solve the THD issue, or just go with a DuroMax or Pulsar.

I have a older lowes Centurion 5000 (by Generac) that killed my frig and would not run my gas furnace. My battery backup APCs would not charge either. I checked the gen output as well but I guess the THD is very high. I grounded the gen back to the panel as well and still no luck.

It did run my freezer, pool pump, fire place blower motor, and small electric heater so was not a total loss. I have a nat gas conversion on my generator so that was nice to not have to worry about fuel either.

I got a new board for the frig 150 bucks hope that fixes that but gonna sell this gen and get something with clean power output. I am looking at the northstar 5000 with honda engine and %5 THD. I can convert this pretty easy to nat gas.

For those living on ranches, a welder/generator might be more practical. We have a newer Lincoln welder with a Honda engine that my brother used during hurricanes.

Multiquip Whisperwatt are extremely quiet generators that use Kubota Diesel engines. I had an old combination welder/generator, but sold it years ago.

I think you mean Watts not Amps... you're not going to find a 12KW for $2400 any where.

I'm leaning to upgrade my existing portable generator to a newer dual fuel system. Can these duel fuel portable genesis run off natural gas? Specifically looking at some of the 10-15KW Duromax models.

Keep in mind you have to reduce running & peak watts based on the fuel source you choose and they almost always advertise the highest numbers. So the WGEN12000DF for example is 12,000 running watts based on gasoline as the fuel source and that is reduced to 10,800 for propane. If you convert to Natural Gas you will need to de-rate the advertised propane numbers by about 15%, so 9,180 watts. Someone may step in and correct me and say it is closer to 88%, but just understand you can't just read the the model number and assume 12,000 watts if you are going to use alternative fuels.

Did you just call their contact number on their website? If they're on the verge of releasing tri-fuel, I can wait. I like the idea of having the factory installed tri-fuel if it's coming and like the ST switch (need to read more on getting inside fridge powered through this).

My current generator can tie me over if needed and I could go ahead and get the transfer switch or interlock built in.

To be perfectly honest, I don't remember at this point. It was a year ago and I read a lot of articles and called a bunch of distributors and manufacturers during the process. COVID-19 makes it seem like a decade ago at the moment.

From what I've read, you need a transfer switch that matches amps on the main breaker. I assume that's correct? Can you go higher or lower?

Mine is 150 amps on the main breaker which doesn't seem to be as common when pricing them out.

I'm wondering if I can use one of the automatic transfer switches with a portable generator. They are certainly more expensive, but it would be nice to have. My thought here is if I buy a Westinghouse with the ST switch and auto start I could basically have a standby generator without the full cost of a standby. The ST switch would basically be the brains to turn the generator on and off based on the grid power availability. Probably end up in the $3000-$4000 range for generator, transfer switch, and install. I'm thinking this would be most helpful when we go on vacations and won't have to worry about power loss to freezers. I could just do the ST switch but I have a fridge inside, one in garage, a small chest freezer, and a stand up deep freeze. The ST only has two outlets.

Anyone know the differences or codes with installing a plug straight to the breaker (and switch off unused breakers) VS a transfer switch? And cost to install?

That's exactly what I'm wondering. I'd rather have a cutoff switch between main and generator power on my breaker box so that I can shut off the main and turn on generator power with one switch, then add on which breakers individually that I want my generator powering at a time. For example, if I wanted to run the A/C only I could turn that breaker on and have everything else for the time being be off.

Here's my breaker box though, and I don't see breakers for the Main on there. I'm thinking the Main switch is outside on the side of the house. Any way of having that also be on the breaker box? Looks like we have empty slots that could house slots for Main and slots for Generator power?

That's good to know- I only need the dual fuel model right now for my household propane tank, but would prefer the tri fuel for versatility in case I need it long-term. Heard anything more if they still might release tri fuel option soon (coming year)?

I THOUGHT I only needed something for hurricane season so I've been holding out on pulling the trigger on a 12000DF gen and will likely continue to do so until maybe early summer.
