I was a LEO for 37 years. My thoughts, based on my experience with these type of circumstances, are this:
Unless a body is found we will never know exactly what happened. The time for finding him alive has probably expired. I would bet that law enforcement officials, unless they have some other information or evidence they are not sharing, are about as far as they can go with this but will continue to carry on with the investigation with the hope that a lead will develop. In time, with nothing further to go on, this will go on a back burner. Open for investigation but nothing current.
During the first few days of the search law enforcement were looking at numerous possibilities. You can bet that they, and the persons involved in the search, were looking for buzzards circling. Buzzards are a sure sign that a animal/mammal has died or is dying. Without that though I would think that Jason, disoriented and probably beginning to suffer from exposure or hypothermia, attempted to find shelter under a log, cedar bush, outbuilding, something. Even personnel trained in grid searches can miss something or make a mistake.
I hope this story has a happy ending but I doubt that it will. His remains will probably be found one day by a hunter or someone cutting firewood. It's a sad story to be sure.
