They are clearly not endangered and they are worse corn thieves than hogs and racoons put together.

I am currently looking at a hundred at least.

That's how I feel about wood ducks when they are out of season. There are times I've got 30 chowing down at me feeders

Primarily whistling. Few wood ducks. All plumed out and gorgeous of course.

I didn't say I was shooting them. It's weird how I really start seeing them in about March and through the summer.

It's only illegal if you get caught

blackbirds and all grackles, cowbirds, crows, or magpies may be controlled without a federal or state depredation permit when found committing or about to commit depredation on ornamental or shade trees, agricultural crops, livestock, or wildlife, or when concentrated in numbers and in a manner, that constitutes a health hazard or other nuisance (Federal Regulation 50 CFR 21.43)."

My FoxPro has a crow call that will bring them in by the hundreds. It's pretty fun to get some wing shooting practice in on a bunch of tattle-tales.

I sure thought crows were classified as varmints and people shot 'em all the time. As I kid I tried to shoot a few but never connected.

I grew up in the Valley and across the street from our neighborhood were citrus fields. My dad was in the ag business and hated grackles because they'd ruin the produce. He taught my brother and I how to shoot a pellet gun from an early age and gave us free reign to shoot them. Never knew it was against the law to kill them. We used to fill a dog bowl with dog food and water and put it in the back yard. Grackles would flock to it, they couldn't help themselves. I must've shot 20 or so in a single day one time.

My Grandparents ate crow during the depression. Would trap them in a live trap and snap their necks. Fry like chicken

Well, look at his name. Stands to reason that he'd be a little sensitive on the issue.

My friends from the RGV told me Othal Brand was known for shooting grackles.
