How can I find out if someone has used their one-time deferral of hunter ed? Can't seem to find out online.

I would think that person would know. Otherwise, probably going to have to call.

You'd need to know some of their personal info but I'd guess trying to enroll online would be the easiest way as it will only allow you to do it once.

Enrolling in hunters ed doesn't have anything to do with the deferral he is asking about AFAIK. In Texas you can pay a fee to defer hunters ed requirement for 1 year only after you are 17.

I think you may need to call TPWD to check. I am not sure that deferral shows on a present year license.

Post her pic and I'll let you know if I've met her before.

If you know some of her basic info like full name and DOB and her TPWD customer number (can be found on old license) you can download the outdoor annual app and add her in the licenses section. It will show if she's had it. I just checked the app and my wife's deferral from 2017 shows up.

This worked perfect - thanks!

When I view my licenses on the app, it shows a hunters ed deferral from way back when. maybe have them link themselves with the app and see.

Keep in mind Texas is somewhat of an oddball on the matter, a lot of states will flat out not sell you a hunting license without it.

That was originally the plan. Then they tried to age band the req., then just threw in the towel.

One problem was initially there were so few places to go get the training it was tough. I got a ticket duck hunting while having a course scheduled 3 weeks later, that was at night 2 hours away from my work. I knew I was playing with fire as it is a high TPW enforced area.

You don't need this if you were born before September 2, 1971, BTW. JIC some folks missed that part. Who else here squeaked by with less than a month to spare?

Note: edited to correct date, I was wrong and don't want to spread misinformation.

Once you are 17, you can take the class entirely online, if that helps. My son took his last week.

That's for Texas. I'm a 1970 baby so I never had to have Hunters Ed until I booked a Mulie hunt in Wyoming. Their cut off date is 1955 DOB I think.

17 years and younger can't do it all on line. They have a field portion

Yes, for Texas. I guess I shouldn't have assumed folks knew I was talking about the greatest state in the union.

This is not correct. 16 and younger cannot do it all online in Texas. 17 and older, can. This is as per the TPWD site and these regs only apply if you are hunting in Texas (other states likely have hunters ed requirements too, so use your google skills to find them):

https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/hunting/hunter-education

Who Must Complete Hunter Education?
Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete a hunter education training course. Proof of certification or deferral is required to be on your person while hunting. Minimum age of certification is 9 years.

Single-day in-person course cost is $15. Persons 17 years of age and older have the option of taking the course in person or online. The cost of an approved online course varies by provider. For information about various course options, call (800) 792-1112 or visit TPWD Hunter Education.

Age Requirements
Minimum age of hunter education certification is 9 years.
If you were born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, and you are:
  • Under 9 years of age: You must be accompanied. Accompanied means: By a person (resident or non-resident) who is at least 17, who is licensed to hunt in Texas, who has passed hunter education or is exempt (born before Sept. 2, 1971), and you must be within normal voice control.
  • Age 9 through 16: You must successfully complete a hunter education course or be accompanied.
  • Age 17 and over: You must successfully complete a hunter education course; or purchase a "Hunter Education Deferral" and be accompanied.
    • "Accompanied" means: by a person (resident or non-resident) who is at least 17, who is licensed to hunt in Texas, who has passed hunter education or is exempt (born before Sept. 2, 1971), and you must be within normal voice control.

Military & Law Enforcement Hunter Education Exemptions
The following persons are exempt from requirements to complete a hunter education course to hunt in Texas:
  • Active duty members and honorably discharged veterans of the United States armed forces;
  • Active duty members or those who have previously served as members of the Texas Army National Guard, Texas Air National Guard, or the Texas State Guard; or
  • Persons who are serving or have previously served as a peace officer as described by Subdivision (1), (2), (3), or (4), Article 2.12, Code of Criminal Procedure.

FWIW....I think my son paid $35 to take it online last weekend, since he didn't get an invite for deer hunting that weekend. No biggie...he said is we easy, and he will be sitting in a blind Saturday morning, all trained up. He is excited to be able to hunt without me.

I went 7 years without having it, then bought my deferral for a draw hunt that ended up being cancelled and was finally had my first run in with a warden. Really glad I bought that deferral. Took the course right after that.

When my son was under 17, we could never find one close by to attend. Anytime they had one near Austin it would always be full almost immediately.
