I pulled a 28' travel trailer with my 2016 F150 w/ the 3.5 Ecoboost. It would tow it OK on a flat and level road, but struggled mightily on any type of grade. It was to the point that it would overheat the truck.
I upgraded to a Chevy 2500HD diesel and it's like nothing is back there.
How heavy was your trailer, and what gears did you have?
I pull a 32' trailer at 7000lbs+ with a 2015 Expedition with EcoBoost. I was able to keep it at 70-75 through the hills on the way to Garner State Park from the Austin area. Just curious because I feel like the Expy could easily handle more weight on long trips.
Driving that fast with that big of a trailer behind an expedition
I am pretty sure those tires are only rated for 65 mph too. Not to call you out, but when I was 15 and just started driving outside the ranch my dad taught me something that applied to way more than hauling trailers. "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should."
To both:
I hear you, and see your concern. However, I have tires rated for 86mph all around. I also have a very good weight distribution/anti-sway hitch setup. On the expedition I have Michelin LTXs. There is integrated trailer brake/ani-sway on the expedition. If I wanted to I CAN go 85 power/tire wise. But 70-75 is stable and I get about 8.5mpg vs only about 9.5 at 65.
Also, I have been pulling trailers my entire life, all the way back to 12 years old pulling single bale hay trailers on the dirt roads of Nacogdoches. I know when it's too much or too fast. If there is any wind over 10mph we are back down to 65-70.
I say all that because I fully expected to be held down to 60-65mph when we got the trailer. I was VERY surprised I could maintain 70-75 safely, and I found that sweet spot over the course of 1000 miles when we first got it.
EDIT:
These are the tires I have all the way around.
