I recently got an English cocker spaniel and it's been a while since I've had a puppy. My springers have always eaten Eukanuba, but the puppy doesn't seem to like it as much and it is getting much harder to find. Does anyone have have a dog food they like for a bird dog? Purina Pro, Science Diet, etc?

We have fed Eukanuba for over 30 years, but the other top brands are fine. Go to Chewy.com and get on their autoship program. They have a large selection of the top brands of food and toys, etc. It is delivered to your gate and a couple bucks cheaper than it is in stores. And you don't have to go to the store and often find what you want is not in stock.

I switched from ProPlan to Victor with my setters. They did great on both, but, the Victor saved me some bucks and it's made in Texas

I can't answer your question about the "best" brand, especially with so many options out there. I know some dogs can be picky and you might have to try a couple before finding one your puppy likes.

With that said, the brands you mentioned are top brands and worth considering. Personally, I feed/fed ProPlan to my pups which used to include an English Cocker Spaniel after switching from Blue Wilderness. We switched after the whole heart issue with grain-free foods articles started coming out a few years ago and have been satisfied with it and the pups seem to enjoy.

I did lots of research on dog food years ago. The answer is whatever your dog likes that isn't filled with corn and other fillers.

Look at the first 5 ingredients, that's what makes the bulk of the dog food. You want things like chicken, peas, carrots, beef, turkey, fish etc. If the word corn in any fashion pops up in the first 3 ingredients, stay away from it.

There are tons of great brands but they can be pretty pricey. Taste of the Wild, is really good. That's just one of many,

I second this. I do lots in animal nutrition and make my own custom blends for livestock. Raised lots of dogs on Purina. Yes, you could find some slightly better but watch out for all these fad dog foods - many do more harm than good - and there are lots of fad dog foods with little science or data to back them up. Purina makes a fine product, reasonable price, availability everywhere, high quality/price ratio, long history of consistency and data, etc.

Diamond High-Energy 24% protein / 20% fat...second ingredient is corn. If my dogs had any more energy I would have to add a sedative to their food.

Tractor Supply Hi-Pro is also fed, primarily in the summer months when their activity level is lessened.

If no signs of allergies, the vast majority of dogs do fine by what Purina has done for decades/generations. Plus the treat of table scraps/leftovers.

I have an 8 month old lab and feeding him the same. He goes through about 5 cups a day. I switched him off of Blue Buffalo large breed puppy about 3 months ago. He had horrific gas on the BB, and according to a few DVM's on this board lots of dogs have digestive issues with BB so I switched both our dogs to Pro Plan.

Kirkland brand from Costco. Most affordable option.

Sometimes I think people over think this decision. Not that its not an important decision.

There's a poster on here that will probably chime in soon, can't think of handle at the moment, that had his dog on some type of all natural dog food and had severe gastro intestinal issues.

Absolutely love that photo of your lab! He looks almost identical to a lab I had about 20 years ago. My lab for 12 years never left my side no matter where I went or what was doing. Thanks for posting the photo - Really brought a big smile to this old guy.

Diamond products including TO the Wild have two serious law suits going on right now for toxins in their foods allegedly. You can google and read about.
Supposedly they settled a lawsuit in 2017 and now it is the same thing again and is ongoing in two states.
Some vets in this forum have said they know of the problems if I am not mistaken.

This! Really ****ty what was happening to the dogs. Dogs were being poisoned. This included Blue Buffalo.

There is a new class action against Blue Buffalo this year.

Costco has a fairly high rated brand of their own. Reputation of Costco to stake.

This is what my street hound eats - she had major allergies when I got her and they are almost all gone these days on this food.

My lab and border collie are fed Whole Earth Farms food. Its not as expensive as the highest end stuff but it is high quality and my dogs love it. Their coats shine like no other. Plus, you can order that from Amazon.

Anyone who makes these claims has no clue what they're talking about. There are lots of ways to manipulate the label so that the meat shows up first. Corn gets a bad rap yet there is not scientific evidence to back that up, but there is a lot of marketing to say otherwise that most people fall for hook, line and sinker. Also, do not use dogfoodadvisor as it is again marketing based and not science based.
There is not one single diet that is right for every pet. Stick with the big three and you'll avoid a lot of headaches (Hills, Purina, and Royal Canin).

The proof is sorta in the pudding on this one. Go look at the ingredients on any dog food that's super cheap. Then go look at any dog food with a 5 star rating.

If what you say is true, dog foods like Ol Roy would either have corn/corn meal way down the list or not listed at all. The expensive dog foods with high ratings have quality ingredients listed in the top 3 or top 5. Tried and true dog foods

What does corn do when it's broken down? What nutritional value does it have?

Been using Nulo made in Texas and been pretty good stuff. Used ORIJEN for a lot of years but it's very expensive but very very good.
